Colonials Tie Sharks in Game One of Series

Giannone records her team-leading 12th point of the season

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The RMU women's hockey team skated to a 1-1 draw against LIU in game one of their non-conference series. The Colonials' record now stands at 5-12-2 overall, with a 0-7-1 mark in conference play.

FIRST PERIOD
  • The Colonials jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just 90 seconds into the game, thanks to junior forward Morgan Giannone. Skating coast-to-coast from the defensive zone, Giannone fired a backhand shot past the LIU goaltender, with Kaitlyn Schooley earning her first assist of the season on the play.
  • RMU outshot the Sharks 9-7 in the first period but failed to convert on two power-play opportunities.

SECOND PERIOD
  • In the second period, LIU evened the score midway through the frame as Anna Fairman found the net, assisted by Alexa Degan.
  • Both teams had ample power-play chances during the middle stanza but were unable to capitalize, keeping the game tied 1-1 heading into the third.

THIRD PERIOD
  • The Colonials thought they had reclaimed the lead four minutes into the third period when Catriona Crarer scored, but a successful goaltender interference challenge by LIU nullified the goal.
  • Despite outshooting the Sharks 9-8 in the period, RMU could not find a game-winner, sending the contest to overtime.
