RMU Women's Hockey Closes 2024 with 3-1 Win Over LIU

Ham scores her first goal as a Colonial

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The RMU women's hockey team wrapped up 2024 on a high note, defeating LIU 3-1 in the series finale. The Colonials head into the New Year with a 6-12-2 overall record.

FIRST PERIOD
  • The Colonials got off to another strong start, scoring early for the second consecutive game. Sophomore Laura Eustace netted her first goal of the season off assists from Calli Arnold and Kaitlyn Schooley.
  • Both teams had two power-play opportunities in the frame but couldn't capitalize, and RMU took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.

SECOND PERIOD
  • The second period was a defensive battle, with neither side able to find the back of the net.
  • LIU outshot RMU 6-4, but the Colonials' penalty-kill unit stood strong, keeping the Sharks off the board during their lone power-play opportunity.

THIRD PERIOD
  • RMU doubled its lead early in the final frame. Mya Neugent started the play in the defensive zone, finding Morgan Giannone, who set up Jersey Phillips for a breakaway. Phillips made a slick move to beat the goaltender, scoring her second goal of the season.
  • LIU answered back seven minutes later to cut the deficit to 2-1.
  • However, with five minutes remaining, Ashlyn Ham provided the insurance RMU needed, scoring her first goal as a Colonial. Shayne Desjardins and Janelle Evans earned assists on the play.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
RMU held a slight edge in shots (24-23) and faceoffs (22-21). Madison Primeau led the team with four shots, while graduate forward Veronica Bac won a team-high seven draws. Defenseman Kaitlyn Schooley posted a team-best +2 rating. The Colonials continued to excel defensively, blocking 14 shots as a team. Sophomore goaltender Maggie Hatch earned her fifth win of the season, making 22 saves.
