ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RMU men's hockey team pushed the game to overtime but fell to RIT in the 3on3 OT period, losing 4-3. The loss brings the Colonials record to 6-7-2 overall with a 3-5-1 mark in conference play.
FIRST PERIOD
- RIT got off to a hot start with two goals in the opening 14 minutes.
- Before the period ended, the Colonials scored to bring the score within one.
- With three seconds left, Tanner Klimpke made a nice move to score with assists from Michael Felsing and Cameron Garvey.
SECOND PERIOD
- Entering the middle frame, RMU's red hot power play got back to work. Mitch Deelstra scored a PPG for the second straight night with assists Klimpke and Michael Craig.
- RIT took back the lead three minutes later, scoring a power play goal of their own.
THIRD PERIOD
- In the final period, Garvey scored to force overtime. After winning the faceoff, he went to the net, scoring a wrap around goal to tie the game. Defenseman J.R. Ashmead recorded his first career point with an assist with Felsing added his second assist of the night.
OVERTIME
- Halfway through the 3on3 overtime period, RIT scored on their second shot to win the game and split the series.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Shots were even as each side posted 27 on target. RMU had a slight edge in the faceoff circle, winning 29 of 56 draws. Captain
Cameron Garvey led RMU in shots with five and faceoff wins (12). On defense,
Greg Japchen blocked a team-high three shots. In net, freshman goaltender
Croix Kochendorfer made 23 saves.
SPECIAL TEAMS
RMU's power play had a great showing in the series at RIT, scoring four times with the man-advantage. This was their most power play goals in a series so far this season.
MULTIPOINT EFFORTS
- Cameron Garvey tallied a goal and an assist tonight for his fourth career multipoint effort. He now owns 15 goals, nine assists and 24 points in his career.
- Tanner Klimpke continued his great series with another goal and assist, totaling two goals and four assists over the weekend. This was his eighth career multipoint effort.
- And, freshman forward Michael Felsing dished out two assists in the game, producing his second multipoint effort. He now owns three goals, seven assists and 10 points.
UP NEXT
RMU will close out 2024 with a series at Canisius in Buffalo, N.Y. The two-game set is scheduled for December 14-15.
