Colonials Drop Close Battle on Senior Day, Falling 5-4 (OT)

Veltri reaches 3,500 career saves

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The Golden Griffins overtime goal sent the visitors home with a 5-4 win in OT. RMU is now 10-21-3 overall and 7-15-2 in AHA action. Canisius moves up to 11-17-4 overall and 10-10-4 in the Atlantic Hockey Conference.
 
1st PERIOD
- Four minutes into the Senior Day game, three graduates combined for the opening goal of the game. Along the boards, Paul Maust made a play to send the puck to the point. Unleashing a shot from distance, Cade Townend slapped the puck on net, being redirected in by Logan Ganie for his 20th career goal.  
- Before the period ended, Canisius tied up the game on their third power play of the period. 

2nd PERIOD
- Entering the middle frame, the Colonials netted the first goal of the period again.
- This time, freshman George Krotiris weaved his way around defenders and scored a wicked wrister into the top corner.
- Going the other way, the Golden Griffins tied it back up, scoring 21 seconds after the Colonials took the lead. 

3rd PERIOD
- The final nine minutes of the third period was full of action as each side scored two goals.
- Canisius took the lead 3-2, but RMU immediately responded with two quick goals.
- Cameron Garvey tied it up for the home side, deflecting in the puck off Mitch Andres's shot that was thrown on goal.
- 52 seconds later, Dallas Tulik put RMU ahead. On a 2on1 rush, Jackson Reineke crossed a pass over to Tulik and off a skate his shot bounced in.
- Down a goal with a few minutes left, Canisius received a power play opportunity. Pulling their goalie, the Golden Griffins held a 6on4 advantage on the ice and tied up the game to send it to overtime. 

3on3 OVERTIME
- 75 seconds into overtime, Griffin Loughran of Canisius won the faceoff and took it to goal himself, scoring the OT winner for the visitors. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
12 players for RMU registered a point tonight, including seven graduating players. Defenseman Cade Townend led the team in shots on goal with six. Freshman McKay Hayes finished with a team-high +2 rating. In the faceoff circle, Logan Ganie led the club in faceoffs, winning 12 draws. Defensively, blue liners Tom Gangl and Mitch Andres each blocked four shots.
 
GANIE THE GRINDER
Tonight, Logan Ganie officially eclipsed 500 career faceoff wins. From Irma, Alberta, the graduate forward across three games against Canisius produced one goal and two assists.
 
VELTRI MAKES AHA HISTORY
Making 47 stops tonight, Chad Veltri officially became the third goalie in Atlantic Hockey history to make 3,500 career saves. He's also now tied second all-time with Andrew Volkening (Air Force, 2006-10) in games played (127). And he's officially passed Volkening for minutes played in his career (7,304) which sits second all-time in the AHA record books.
 
UP NEXT
The Colonials will finish up the 2023-24 regular season at Air Force, playing a two-game set on February 23-24. Next weekend's results will determine seeding for the 2024 AHA Playoff Tournament.
