RMU Falls Short in OT at RIT, Losing 3-2

Giampietro scores four goals in the series

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Kylie Aquaro's game-winning goal in overtime lifts RIT over RMU, 3-2. The Colonials are now 11-17-0 overall on the year and are 8-8-0 in the CHA. RIT moves up to 12-15-2 overall and 6-10-0 in conference play.
 
1st PERIOD
  • Repeating last night, neither side scored in the first 20 minutes.
  • Both teams totaled 10 shots on goal each.
 
2nd PERIOD
  • Alaina Giampietro opened up the scoring by sniping in a wrist shot. Making a great defensive play in RIT's zone, she stole the puck off a defenseman and added in her third goal of the series.
  • The Colonials killed off two penalties through the middle frame. Goaltender Emma Gorski made four stops on the two penalty kills.
 
3rd PERIOD
  • Entering the final period, RIT tied up the game, finding the back of the net for the first time of the day.
  • Two minutes later, Alaina Giampietro scored once again. Similar to her overtime winning goal from last night, she skated with speed down the right side. Closing in on goal, she slid the puck in through the goalie's five-hole.
  • At the halfway point of the period, the Tigers tied the game up again, making the score an even, 2-2.
  • RMU successfully defended two RIT penalties in the final period.
 
3on3 OVERTIME
  • This time, the Tigers would win in OT, 3-2. Kylie Aquaro all alone in on goal cashed in to win it for RIT.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Forward Alaina Giampietro led the squad in shots (13) and shots on goal (6). In the faceoff circle, Jersey Phillips in her 101st career game won a team-high eight draws. Defensively, Thalia D'Elia blocked seven shots in tonight's game. That is a record for blocks in one game this season for RMU. Across the two-game series, she led all players with 12. Graduate defenseman Chloé Puddifant dished out an assist today for the second straight game. She owns eight assists in her last 10 appearances.
 
GIAMPIETRO GETS TWO MORE
Freshman forward Alaina Giampietro gathered goals all weekend in Rochester, N.Y. From Strongsville, Ohio, Giampietro scored two more goals today, totaling four in the series. This is her third time producing four points in a series and first time it's four goals across the two games. During the 2023-24 campaign, she's paced for seven multipoint efforts and three, two-goal games. Giampietro leads the team in goals and points (15-9—24). She's ranked second in the conference in goals and tied seventh in points.
 
UP NEXT
RMU will now return home to face Penn State for their final home series of the season. The two-game set is scheduled for February 9-10. Friday night's contest will be RMU Women's Hockey's Pink Game. The first 500 fans will receive a pink headband sponsored by UPMC. Saturday's meeting will be Senior Day.
