SPARTANSBURG, S.C. – On their opening day of the 2024 campaign, the Colonials won their first game of the season against George Mason thanks to a walk-off home run by
Avery Winchell, winning 4-3 (8 innings). RMU then fell in their second contest of the day against Wofford, 3-0. The Colonials overall are 1-1 to begin the season.
GAME 1 VS. GEORGE MASON
- Through the first three innings of the day, neither side added a run on the board. RMU's starting pitcher Madison DeVault didn't allow a hit through the first three innings.
- In the top of the fourth inning, the Patriots posted the first score of the game as Jordan Ander hit a 2-RBI double to make it 2-0.
- Responding quickly, RMU's first home run of the game came off the bat of Anna Resnik as she blasted one into deep left-center field.
- Gaining momentum, the offense started to build longer innings after Resnik's blast. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Colonials recorded two hits but no runs.
- Entering the next inning, Faith Miller singled to begin the rally. Julia Ehrman ran for her, scoring a run off Meadow Sacadura's RBI double.
- With a tie game at 2-2 after seven innings, the contest went to extra innings.
- George Mason added a run in the eighth to take control but RMU's Avery Winchell had other plans.
- Starting extra innings with a base runner on second, Courtney Poulich took an easy job to home plate off Avery Winchell's first home run of the season. The Colonials would win their first game of the 2024 campaign, 4-3 (8 innings).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Catcher
Meadow Sacadura led the team in hits with two. Pitcher
Madison DeVault threw for all eight innings, reaching a career high for innings pitched in one game. She only allowed five hits and paced for seven strikeouts. In her career she's thrown seven strikeouts or more on five occasions. DeVault's career high was nine strikeouts thrown against NKU last season (4/8/23). Hitting far right off the bat, this was RMU's first 2-homerun game since their game at IUPUI in 2023.
GAME 2 VS. WOFFORD
- Starting off the second game of the day, the Terrier's scored first, grabbing a stolen base and RBI-double to take a 1-0 lead early in the first inning.
- Onto the top of the second inning, Faith Miller added another hit on the day, collecting RMU's first base runner.
- In the bottom of the third, Wofford homered to right field, gathering a 2-0 advantage.
- Entering the bottom of the fifth inning, the Terriers played small ball, advancing a runner off a bunt. With runners on second and third, the home side brought one runner in to take a 3-0 lead.
- Over the next two innings, the Colonials weren't able to build any offense, falling 3-0 in their second game of the series.

Jane Garver started her first game of the season, going 4.1 innings and threw four strikeouts. Junior transfer
Jaimee Hardy appeared in the circle for her first time in an RMU jersey. Pitching 1.2 innings, she collected two strikeouts.
UP NEXT
RMU will continue play in the Terrier Invite tournament tomorrow at 10:00 AM, facing Eastern Kentucky. Further games in the tournament are dependent on tomorrow morning's results.
