Colonials Fall to the Phoenix in Home Opener

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Green Bay's offense pushed the visitors to earn a 7-5 and 10-7 victory. RMU is now 3-13 overall and 0-2 in Horizon League play to begin the 2024 campaign. Green Bay now owns a 6-15 overall record and are 2-0 in conference action.
 
GAME 1
  • Green Bay's offense hit consistently through the first four innings. The Phoenix produced one run in each of the first four innings.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, the Colonials bats got to work. Graduate first baseman Avery Winchell blasted a double, bringing home catcher Meadow Sacadura.
  • Next in the rally, Alaina Koutsogiani hit a single right up the middle. Winchell reached home plate, making it a 4-2 ball game.
  • The visitors responded in the top of the fifth, scoring three more runs. Green Bay registered a home run and a double steal play, pulling ahead, 7-2.
  • Responding in the bottom of the fifth, Logan Black stepped in as a pinch hitter, smacking a hit to deep right field. Rounding the bases, Jess Matheny scored.
  • The Colonials fought back in the final inning, down 7-3. Working towards a comeback, Matheny scored another run as Kaylyn Hopf grounded out to first, bringing home Matheny.
  • Winchell added another RBI on the day, crushing a hit to deep center field. Logan Black earned the run. In the end, RMU's comeback fell just short, falling 7-5.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
RMU outhit Green Bay, 10-8. Logan Black, Avery Winchell and Alaina Koutsogiani each posted two hits. Winchell produced a team-high two RBI's. She's registered seven RBI's in her past four contests. Outfielder Jess Matheny led the team in runs with a pair. Jane Garver started the game in the circle, pacing for four strikeouts across 4.1 innings. Junior Jaimee Hardy finished off the game, pitching the final 2.2 innings and throwing one strikeout.
 
GAME 2
  • RMU started the game off on fire, jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning.
  • Beginning the scoring for the Colonials, from Peters Township, Alaina Koutsogiani recorded an RBI-double to bring home catcher Meadow Sacadura.
  • Designated player, Catalina Saxen singled down the right field line, advancing Koutsogiani to third base as Avery Winchell scored.
  • Continuing the rally, Charlotte Grover hit a SAC fly for Koutsogiani to score, making it 3-0.
  • Up next, second baseman Anna Resnik also hit an RBI-double. Logan Black moved around the diamond to third base and Saxen earned the run.
  • On third base, Logan Black scored the next run off a wild pitch.
  • RMU's first inning rally didn't end as Jess Matheny posted an RBI single to center field which was enough distance for Resnik to cross home plate.
  • Over the next five innings, Green Bay pulled back to take a 9-6 lead. Their offensive run included six RBI singles and one solo home run.
  • In the bottom of the sixth inning, Kaylyn Hopf posted an RBI as Anna Resnik scored an unearned run as she previously got on base due to an error by the Phoenix's shortstop.
  • After a rain delay, Green Bay scored one more run to officially earn a sweep on their first day of conference play, winning 10-7.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The Colonials paced for nine hits in the second game of the doubleheader. In game two, Avery Winchell posted another two hits along with Anna Resnik and Kaylyn Hopf. Six different players produced an RBI. Kailani Tatro (2.0), Kaitlyn Molitoris (2.0) and Jamiee Hardy (3.0) each pitched a couple innings in the contest. Molitoris retired two batters in her two innings.

RMU and Green Bay will conclude the series tomorrow on Friday, March 15 at a time to be announced.
