RMU Women's Lacrosse Defeats Akron in Overtime Thriller, 10-9

Moon Township, Pa– Jenna Irwin scored the overtime winner as the RMU Women's Lacrosse team defeated Akron, 10-9.

With the win, the Colonials improves to 2-8 on the season and registered their first conference win. Also, Akron drops to 4-6 on the year and now moves to 0-1 in conference play.

1st HALF
The start of the game didn't go as planned for the Colonials as they were shut out in the first quarter with only one shot on goal. Akron scored the lone goal in the first frame at the 3:59 mark as the Zips had four shots on goal in the quarter. RMU goalkeeper Megan Shepley stopped a game-high three shots in the first quarter as she was stout in net all game.

The second quarter was a complete back and forth battle as there was seven goals combined between the two squads. Jenna Irwin put the Colonials on the board just one minute into the second quarter but soon after the Zips would score two more of their own. Freshman Julia Hadden scored her first goal of the game off a nice assist from Irwin to cut the Akron lead to one tally. The Colonials would end the first half on a 2-0 run courtesy of Isabella Teal and Julia Hadden which ultimately tied the contest at four.

2ND HALF
RMU locked in defensively to start the second half as the Colonials ended up shutting out the Zips entirely in the third quarter. The Hadden sisters provided offense in the third quarter as Lilli Hadden picked up her first goal of the game off an assist from her younger sister Julia at the 6:10 mark. Lilli Hadden would strike again in the third frame as she scored two minutes later to make the score 6-4 in favor of RMU.

The Colonials started the fourth quarter the same way they ended the third as Colleen Tifft found the back of the net for her first goal of the game at the 12:20 mark. RMU would score two of the next three goals to make the score 9-5 as Chelsea Coleman and Irwin picked up the tallies for the Colonials. However, Akron would score four straight goals in a six-minute time period to tie the game at nine and send the game to overtime.

OVERTIME
This was the first time this season that the Colonials went to overtime as RMU prepared for a three-minute period with the first goal being the winner. Between both teams there wasn't any offense to be had in the first two overtime periods with only one shot on goal in the two frames. The Colonials maintained possession for most of the third overtime and it paid off as Colleen Tifft found Jenna Irwin cutting to the net as Irwin sealed the game with the final score, 10-9.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Jenna Irwin led the Colonials with three goals as she has now scored three goals in back to back games. Lilli Hadden recorded four points off of two goals and two assists while her younger sister Julia had two goals and one assist on the afternoon. Colleen Tifft finished the game with one goal and two assists on a team-high four shots. Freshman goalkeeper Megan Shepley got another start in net as she had seven saves and seven ground balls while also registering her first win as a Colonial.

UP NEXT
The Colonials will continue conference play next weekend when they travel to Ohio and play Kent State next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
