Kent, Oh– Jenna Irwin's goal 38 seconds into the third overtime period lifted the RMU women's lacrosse team to an 11-10 victory over Kent State on Saturday.
With the win, the Colonials jumped to 3-8, 2-0 MAC while the Golden Flashes dropped their first conference matchup and moved to 4-8, 1-1 MAC.
1st HALF
RMU wasn't able to get off to a fast start on Saturday afternoon as the Colonials had just one shot on goal in the entire frame. Kent State started the game with three straight goals while RMU didn't get on the board until the 3:01 mark when
Jenna Irwin collected her first goal of the game. The Colonials closed the quarter trailing by one as
Megan Shepley had four saves at the end of the quarter.
The Colonials started the second quarter aggressive on the offensive front as they scored two out of the next three goals in the game to make it just a one goal deficit for RMU. Kent State answered every RMU goal with one of their own but the Colonials finished the second quarter with the last laugh as
Isabella Teal scored with three seconds left to give RMU the momentum.
2ND HALF
Graduate attackers
Julia Koterwas and
Jerica Obee each scored a goal to open the second half as RMU had their first lead of the game at the 11:01 mark in the third quarter. The Colonials finished the quarter with a game-high seven shots on goal as they pressured the Kent State defense continuously.
The fourth quarter was all about the offense as each team scored four goals as there was three lead changes in the frame.
Julia Koterwas,
Eliana LaMange,
Julia Hadden, and
Jenna Irwin all tallied a goal for RMU in the fourth. RMU had the 10-9 lead late in the game when Kent State scored with 1:42 remaining to help send the game into overtime.
OVERTIME
There was not much action going on in the first two overtimes as both teams only registered a combined two shots on goal. It wasn't until 38 seconds into the third overtime that
Jenna Irwin scored the game-winning goal for the second time this season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Julia Koterwas and
Jenna Irwin each scored a team-high three goals as Irwin also collected three ground balls and four draw controls.
Isabella Teal,
Colleen Tifft,
Julia Hadden,
Jerica Obee, and
Eliana LaMange each scored one goal with LaMange picking up her first goal of the season.
Megan Shepley finished the game with seven saves and nine ground balls as she's now secured back to back overtime wins.
