CHARLOTTE, N.C.– RMU Women's Lacrosse picked up their first win of the season against Queens, 13-8 on Friday afternoon.
With the win, the Colonials move to 1-6 on the season. Additionally, Queens fell to 4-3 on the year after the loss.
1st HALF
RMU got started quickly on offense in this contest as the Colonials scored the first three goals of the game against the Royals.
Julia Koterwas got on the board first less than two minutes into the game as she notched her 100
th career point with that tally.
Lilli Hadden followed up just a minute later with a goal of her own while
Jerica Obee tallied her first of three goals with six minutes remaining in the first frame. Goalie
Sydney Riker was a star in the first quarter as she stopped a game-high five shots in the quarter while shutting out the Royals.
The second quarter didn't start as smoothly for the visiting team as Queens opened the frame with two goals in a two-minute time span. However, the momentum shifted greatly when the Colonials scored five straight goals courtesy of Obee and freshman
Isabella Teal. Teal recorded a hat trick in less than nine minutes during the second quarter as she now has four goals on the season. The Colonials would end the first half with an 8-2 lead.
2ND HALF
The second half started as a back and forth battle as the Royals struck first but then
Jenna Irwin and
Lilli Hadden added a goal to keep the lead at seven. However, Queens turned around and scored four straight goals to end the third quarter as they trimmed the deficit to three against RMU. The Colonials had six turnovers compared to the Royals with just one in the third frame which played a part in the Royals comeback attempt.
RMU was able to rebound in the fourth quarter less than two minutes into the frame when
Samantha Brothers scored her first career goal to extend the Colonials lead.
Lilli Hadden then put the Colonials up by five as she recorded her second hat trick of the season with 6:37 remaining. RMU would score one more goal with 1:27 left in the game courtesy of
Jenna Irwin who tallied two goals on the afternoon.
JOINING THE CLUB
Courtney Grove recorded her first win as the Colonials head coach on Friday afternoon. This is also Grove's first Division I win as a head coach as she was formerly the head coach at Seton Hill.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
The Colonials had three different players who scored a hat trick as Teal, Obee, and Hadden all recorded three goals. Obee led the team with five points as she also tallied two assists along with her three goals. Irwin notched two goals and a team-high four draw controls for the Colonials while Koterwas and Brothers each tallied one goal for RMU.
Sydney Riker recorded a career-high 16 saves against the Royals while also picking up five ground balls in her first win as the starting goalie.

UP NEXT
The Colonials will take a short break from game action until Tuesday afternoon when RMU travels to face Mount St. Mary's. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
