MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa – The RMU women's lacrosse team defeated Youngstown State in a pivotal conference matchup, 17-6.
With the win, the Colonials jumped to 4-11 3-2 MAC while the Penguins fell to 0-14, 0-4 MAC.
1st HALF
The Colonials scored in bunches to start the game as
Colleen Tifft and
Chelsea Coleman each scored a goal in the opening three minutes. RMU had eight shots on goal in the first frame along with forcing five Youngstown State turnovers. The Colonials ended the first quarter the same way they started it as
Samantha Brothers and
Jenna Irwin netted goals to increase the RMU lead to three.
Youngstown State fought back in the second quarter as the Penguins tallied the first two points in the frame. However, the Colonials just kept on shooting the ball as they recorded three goals in the quarter courtesy of Coleman, Irwin, and
Isabella Teal. RMU ended the first half on a 2-0 scoring run along with a three-goal lead.
2ND HALF
The Penguins grabbed the early momentum after halftime with two straight goals and cut the RMU lead to one goal, 7-6. The Colonials bounced back however midway through the frame and ended up scoring three straight goals to end the quarter. Possession helped RMU in the third as the home team had a team-high five draw controls.
RMU dominated the fourth quarter as the Colonials had seven goals and finished the game on a 9-0 scoring run that began in the third frame. Tifft and Coleman had five goals combined in the quarter while Teal and
Lilli Hadden each scored once. Seven goals were the most tallies that RMU has had in any quarter all season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Colleen Tifft had a huge game for RMU as she had a game-high eight points off of five goals and three assists.
Chelsea Coleman had a big game as well with four goals and one assists while
Jenna Irwin added three goals and has recorded yet another hat trick.
Isabella Teal had two goals in the contest as
Eliana LaMange,
Samantha Brothers, and
Lilli Hadden all scored once against the Penguins.
Sydney Riker got the start in net as she recorded 10 saves in the game.
MOVING ON UP
With
Jenna Irwin's four-point performance she has now reached 100 career points. Irwin leads the team with having six games of at least three goals while also recording back-to-back overtime game-winning goals this season. Irwin leads the team with 31 points in 15 games played.
UP NEXT
RMU will have a quick turnaround and face Duquesne on Tuesday night at Joe Walton Stadium. The non-conference bout is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+.
