Starkey’s Overtime Goal Leads RMU Men’s Lacrosse Over Queens 14-13

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Ben Starkey scored 30 seconds into overtime to lead RMU to a 14-13 victory over Queens on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Colonials improve to 4-8 overall and 3-4 in ASUN play while the Royals fall to 2-9, 1-6 ASUN.
 
1st QUARTER
It didn't take RMU long to get on the board as James Leary found the back of the net 59 seconds into play. Elliot Holden also scored in the opening frame as the score was deadlocked at 2-2 after the first 15 minutes.
 
2nd QUARTER
Queens scored four of the first five goals in the 2nd period to take a 6-3 lead into halftime.
 
3rd QUARTER
Starkey scored the first of his three 3rd period goals 31 seconds in. David Burr, Holden, Bobby Reaume and Kean Moon all added goals to give RMU a 10-9 lead heading into the final quarter.
 
4th QUARTER
Will MacLeod gave the Colonials a two-goal cushion 42 seconds in the 4th quarter. However, the Royals would tie the match at 11-11 at the 7:50 mark. The teams exchanged goals, which included a Brendan Cina score, before Reaume put RMU ahead 13-12 with 2:39 left. With 24 seconds remaining, the Royals got called for a 1-minute slashing penalty. Queens forced a turnover and Jack Royer's desperation shot with 1.1 seconds remaining found a way in the cage to force overtime.
 
OVERTIME
Still a man-up to start overtime, Burr's shot was saved, but MacLeod was able to secure the ground ball. He passed to Burr, who found Starkey on the left side. Starkey's shot found noting but net 30 seconds in to secure the victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Reaume scored his first career goal today
  • Burr had three assists while Starkey, MacLeod, Zach Seppi, Reaume, Holden and Nick Pelletier each had one
  • Nate Fechter made 15 saves
  • 30 of RMU's 41 shots were on target
  • The Colonials picked up 36 ground balls and forced a season-best 11 turnovers
 
UP NEXT
The Colonials play their final road contest of the year when that travel to Lindenwood on April 20. They return to Joe Walton Stadium on April 27 for a noon contest against Air Force to wrap up the regular season. This will also be RMU's Senior Day.
