MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU football team (1-2) scored the second-most points in program history as it defeated Mercyhurst (1-2) 55-28 on Saturday afternoon at Joe Walton Stadium.
Anthony Chiccitt was 19-for-25 with career-highs of five touchdowns and 307 yards. Chiccitt found
Noah Robinson four times for 116 yards and a pair of touchdowns. On the ground,
Tyvon Edmonds Jr. rushed 19 times for 138 yards and one score. As a unit, RMU put up 536 yards of total offense, also the second most in program history.
On defense,
Jamar Shegog recorded double-figure tackles for the third straight game, making 11 stops with one sack.
Dee Pierce also had 11 tackles.
Seth Verilus recorded his first interception as a Colonial.
The Colonials jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first six minutes. Chiccitt found Robinson for a 14-yard touchdown at 10:44. Verilus' interception two plays into the Lakers' first possession set up a
DJ Moyer 3-yard touchdown run. RMU extended its lead to 21-0 on
Chaz Middleton's 5-yard scoring catch.
Mercyhurst would score on its next two possessions to make the score 21-14 before a 63-yard Robinson catch and run along with
Trenell Ridgley's 17-yard score sent the game into halftime with RMU leading 34-14. In the second half, touchdowns by Edmonds,
Ethan Shine and
Trevor Wilson (from
Zach Tanner) capped the Colonials' scoring.
RMU opens NEC play next Saturday, September 21 at Wagner. The Colonials return to Joe Walton Stadium on Saturday, October 12 against Delaware State for Homecoming. Kickoff is at 3:00 p.m.
GAME NOTES
- This is the most points RMU has scored since they put up 54 at Central Connecticut State on November 9, 2013 – the school record is 63 points at September 30, 2000
- The previous record for points at Joe Walton Stadium was 49 in the inaugural game against Butler on September 17, 2005
- Although Mercyhurst is a member of the Northeast Conference, this game will not be counted as a conference matchup due to the Lakers not playing a full NEC schedule this season
- Chiccitt is the fourth Colonial to throw five touchdowns in a single-game, joining Jake Newman, Tim Levcik and Drew Geyer – Geyer holds the RMU single-game record with six
