RMU Volleyball Splits First Day of Chick-Fil-A Robinson Classic

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – RMU Volleyball picked up a win in their first match against Coppin State, 3-2, but fell to Niagara in the last match of the day, 3-0. 

Match 1: RMU vs. Coppin State
  • In the opening match, RMU started strong, winning the first two sets in commanding fashion. The Colonials recorded 11 kills with a .321 hitting percentage in the first set, which was their highest percentage of any set in the match. RMU followed the first set with a dominant second in which the Colonials never allowed a lead change and cruised to a 25-11 set win.
  • The next two sets didn't go as planned for RMU as Coppin State notched 17 kills in the third and fourth sets to even match. The Eagles' Takenya Stafford registered 13 kills combined in the third and fourth sets to help Coppin State close the gap.
  • RMU's offense came back in the fifth set with a vengeance as the Colonials had 10 kills out of their 15 points in the final set. Throughout the match, RMU controlled the service line as the Colonials notched nine aces compared to the Eagles who had three.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Sophomore Natalie Stepanovich led the Colonials with 16 kills and 14 digs. Azra Eric had another strong effort in front of the net as she registered eight blocks while adding a team-high three aces.

Match 2: RMU vs. Niagara
  • The last match of the day featured three highly competitive sets that were all narrowly won by Niagara. The Purple Eagles won two out of the three sets by just two points over the Colonials.
  • The second set was a marathon for both teams as the score was tied in 12 instances along with there being six lead changes.
  • In the final set, RMU had a late 19-17 lead looking to extend the match until Niagara's offense opened up an 8-0 run to win the match.
 INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Sophomore outside hitter Jocelyn Jourdan was a key player for RMU against the Purple Eagles, leading the match in kills (15) and attacks (34). Jaidan Hockman was a key contributor on defense as she led the team with 18 digs against Niagara.
 
UP NEXT
The Colonials will close out the Chick-Fil-A Robinson Classic tomorrow when they travel to play at Duquesne at 3 p.m. This will be the 47th meeting between the cross-town rivals as the match can be seen on ESPN+.
