RMU Volleyball Closes Chick-Fil-A Robinson Classic with Loss to Duquesne

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The RMU volleyball team closed the Chick-Fil-A Robinson Volleyball Classic with a 3-1 loss to Duquesne on Saturday.

With the loss, the Colonials fall to 3-3 while the Dukes improved to 5-1 on the season.

KEY SET MOMENTS
  • RMU didn't come out as strong in the first set as the Colonials only had two instances in which they scored two points in a row during the set. The Dukes had a .367 hitting percentage in the first frame along with 13 kills to take a 25-17 set win.
  • The Colonials came out scoring points aggressively in the second stanza as both teams traded the first 10 points of the set. However, the Dukes went on two separate 4-0 runs in the middle of the set to claim a 19-11 lead. RMU didn't stop scoring though as the Colonials went on a 4-0 run of their own late in the set but it wasn't enough as Duquesne escaped with a 25-18 set win.
  • RMU transferred their momentum to the third set where they opened an 8-3 set lead courtesy of two kills, two aces, and four miscues from the Dukes. The third stanza ended up being a marathon as there was continues ties and lead changes until the Colonials were down 28-27 when the offense erupted to score five out of the next seven points and win the set. Hillarie Adams, Natalie Frost, and Keira Hornung each had pivotal kills late to take the third set, 32-30.
  • The fourth set wasn't kind to the Colonials to start as the Dukes opened a 20-9 lead which made things look bleak. However, RMU never stopped and opened up a 10-1 scoring run to trim the Duquesne lead to just two points. Ally Christman and Ashleigh Wallin combined for five aces during the extended run. Unfortunately for the Colonials, Duquesne scored four out of the next six points to win the match.
FRESHMEN FIRSTS
Keira Hornung and Natalie Frost each had career-firsts as Colonials on Saturday against the Dukes. Frost recorded her first start at RMU as she finished the day with seven kills, six digs, and two assists. Hornung recorded her first blocks and kills as a Colonial as she closed the match with four total blocks and three kills coming off the bench.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Hillarie Adams led the charge for RMU on offense as she finished with 12 kills while adding four blocks. Ally Christman, Azra Eric, and Ashleigh Wallin each had a team-high three aces while Eric added five blocks to lead RMU.

UP NEXT
The Colonials will go on the road next weekend when they travel to South Carolina for the Charleston Invitational. RMU will battle Middle Tennessee State, Utah Tech, and Charleston. These will be the last road non-conference matches for RMU this season.
