MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – A safety at the 11:08 mark of the 4
th quarter proved to be the game-winner as Edinboro upended RMU 23-21 on Saturday night at Joe Walton Stadium.
The Colonials (0-2) fell behind 14-0 before scoring twice in the span of 1:16 last in the 2
nd quarter. RMU got on the board when
Anthony Chiccitt found
Chaz Middleton for an 8-yard score at 1:47. On the Fighting Scots' next play from scrimmage,
Rob Carter, Jr. intercepted the ball and returned it to the Edinboro 15. On the next play,
Tyvon Edmonds Jr. found the end zone and the score was knotted up at 14-14 going into halftime.
The Fighting Scots' retook the lead late in the 3
rd quarter as they capitalized on an interception to go ahead 21-14. However, on the Colonials' ensuing possession,
DJ Moyer capped a 66-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown run to tie the contest at 21-21.
RMU's defense held Edinboro to a 3-and-out before a Fighting Scots' 74-yard punt that was downed at the 1-yard line. On the Colonials first play of the drive, Chiccitt was hit and the ball rolled out of the end zone resulting in the deciding points of the game.
Up next, RMU remains at home to open its NEC schedule when it faces Mercyhurst on September 14. The game will stream on ESPN+.
GAME NOTES
- The standing room only sellout crowd of 3,581 was the most at Joe Walton Stadium since 3,942 on Oct. 11, 2008 against Duquesne
- Jamar Shegog and Dee Pierce each finished with a team-high 11 tackles
- Lucas Lambert added 2.5 sacks
