Colonials Rally to Tie Lions 3-3, Claim Extra Point in Shootout Victory

RMU erases three-goal deficit to secure extra point in the standings

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The RMU women's hockey team showcased resilience, climbing back from a 3-0 deficit to tie Lindenwood, 3-3, and securing the extra point in the standings with a dramatic shootout victory. The Colonials now sit at 6-14-3 overall and 0-7-2 in Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) play.
 
FIRST PERIOD
  • Lindenwood struck first, finding the back of the net midway through the opening period.
  • Both teams had power play opportunities but failed to capitalize, heading into intermission with the Lions leading 1-0.
 
SECOND PERIOD
  • The Lions extended their lead early in the second, adding two quick goals within the first eight minutes to make it 3-0.
  • RMU fought back, keeping the pressure on recording 11 shots in the period, but remained scoreless heading into the final frame.
 
THIRD PERIOD
  • The Colonials began their comeback with 10 minutes remaining in regulation. Defenseman Kaitlyn Schooley forced a turnover at the blue line and launched a shot toward the net. Lindsey Smolen tipped the puck, and Catriona Crarer finished the play to put RMU on the board.
  • Minutes later, Jersey Phillips fired a sharp shot from the offensive zone to bring the Colonials within one, with an assist from Emma Goding.
  • With just 40 seconds left, RMU's persistence paid off. After winning a challenge that resulted in a penalty shot, sophomore Janelle Evans executed a slick move to tie the game, sending it to overtime.
 
OVERTIME
  • Despite being shorthanded for two minutes during the 3-on-3 overtime period, RMU's defense held strong.
  • Goaltender Maggie Hatch delivered eight critical saves to keep the Lions at bay and force a shootout.
 
SHOOTOUT
  • Lindenwood's Morgan Neitzke scored on the first attempt, but Hatch shut the door on the next two.
  • On RMU's side, Phillips tied the shootout, setting the stage for Smolen, who buried the game-winner to clinch the extra point.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Lindenwood outshot RMU 38-30.
  • Both teams were evenly matched in the faceoff circle, winning 31 draws each. Calli Arnold led RMU with seven faceoff wins.
  • Six Colonials recorded points in the contest, while the team collectively blocked 14 shots.
  • Hatch stopped 35 shots in regulation and overtime, boosting her save total for the season.
