DETROIT –
Ryan Prather Jr.'s 3-pointer at the buzzer in overtime fell short as Detroit Mercy came back from a 14-point deficit to defeat RMU 78-76 at Calihan Hall on Thursday evening.
1st HALF
RMU was able to build a double-digit lead by the 8:58 mark of the 1
st half on
Amarion Dickerson's jumper. A 3-pointer by
DJ Smith made the score 31-17 and gave the Colonials its largest lead of the game at 14 points. Detroit Mercy recorded the last two field goals of the period to send the game into halftime at 31-21.
2nd HALF
UDM was about to make it a one-possession game on Legend Geeter's jumper that made the score 40-37. RMU responded by retaking a double-figure advantage at 49-39 on
Alvaro Folgueiras layup at 12:57. However, the Titans would chip away and tie the score at 58-58 and eventually take a 64-62 lead at the 3:17 mark. The game would see three more ties the final coming on Folgueiras' free throws with 48 seconds left that deadlocked the score at 68-68.
OVERTIME
Dickerson opened the scoring with a driving layup, but Detroit Mercy answered with a 3-pointer from Emmanuel Kuac to go ahead 61-60 at 4:05. The Colonials would go ahead 76-73with 1:07 remaining, but TJ Nadeau would respond with a layup to make it a one point game with 49 seconds left. After an RMU timeout, UDM forced a turnover that led to a pair of Kuac free throws, giving the Titans a 77-76 lead with 22 seconds remaining. The Colonials could not connect on their next possession which led to Kuac making the first of two foul shots with three seconds left. RMU called a time out, but Prather's shot didn't go as time expired.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Dickerson and Kam Woods each had 20 points and Josh Omojafo added 13 points
- Orlando Lovejoy led all players with 32 points for UDM
- Folgueiras recorded a career-high seven assists
- RMU converted only 17.4% (4-23) from 3-point range
- There were nine tied and six lead changes
UP NEXT
RMU remains on the road when they travel to Oakland on January 4. They return to the UPMC Events Center to host Cleveland State on January 8 and Wright State on January 12.
