Colonials Defeat Oakland in Horizon League Play

Murray posts first double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mi. – The RMU women's basketball team won their second conference game in a row with a victory over Oakland, 73-63. The Colonials are now 7-12 overall and have picked up their third Horizon League win of the season.

FIRST QUARTER
  • Both teams got off to a slow start scoring as the two squads combined for just 10 points in the first six minutes of action.
  • However, Raissa Nsabua was a key player for RMU in the stanza as she scored eight of her 12 points in this frame.
  • Noa Givon closed the quarter on a tough layup that resulted in a foul and a three-point play that Givon converted on. Oakland hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to take the 17-14 lead going to the second frame.
SECOND QUARTER
  • The Colonials played some of their best complimentary basketball of the season in this quarter as RMU scored 25 points and only allowed Oakland to make three shots.
  • RMU got off to a fast start and hit three-pointers on back-to-back possessions courtesy of Katelyn Chomko and Micah O'Dell.
  • Oakland struggled to end the first half as RMU held the Golden Grizzlies scoreless in the final three minutes. The Colonials opened up their largest lead of the game going into halftime with the score 42-28.
THIRD QUARTER
  • Oakland came out of the game ready to score as they shot a game-high 50 percent from the field in this quarter.
  • The Colonials weren't as successful shooting in this quarter but did find their points from beyond the arc thanks to Mya Murray, Noa Givon, and Jennica Suggs.
  • A key factor in this quarter was that RMU scored 10 points off of second chances compared to Oakland who had three second chance points.
 FOURTH QUARTER
  • The Golden Grizzlies controlled the scoring from the get-go in this frame and would end up out scoring RMU 21-15 in the quarter.
  • Oakland attempted to come back but had couldn't convert from beyond the arc as the home team was 0-7 from 3P in the stanza.
  • RMU wouldn't allow the Golden Grizzlies to come back as the Colonials went 10-12 from the free throw line and would defeat Oakland, 73-63.
 
BACK-TO-BACK
The Colonials have now won back-to-back conference games for the first time since February 2022. RMU's defense has been stifling the last two games allowing both Youngstown State and Oakland to shoot just 38 percent from the floor.

 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Mya Murray led the Colonials on both ends of the floor as she had a team-high 12 points and 10 rebounds. Raissa Nsabua also had 12 points while having nine rebounds and a steal. Noa Givon hit double figures with 10 points and had two steals.

The Colonials will close out their three-game road trip with a final stop at Detroit Mercy on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+.
