RMU Men's Hockey Falls to Army, 6-3

Garvey records two assists

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. The RMU men's hockey team dropped the series opener against Army, falling 6-3. The loss moves the Colonials to 9-12-3 overall and 6-8-2 in Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) play.
 
FIRST PERIOD
  • Army opened the scoring late in the first period with a goal from Brent Keefer at the 17-minute mark.
  • Shots were even at 10 apiece, and RMU had two power play opportunities but failed to convert.
 
SECOND PERIOD
  • Army extended their lead quickly in the second, scoring two goals within the first three minutes to go up 3-0.
  • RMU responded less than a minute later when George Krotiris tapped in his second goal of the season, assisted by Cameron Garvey and Walter Zacher.
  • Krotiris nearly added another, but a Colonials challenge on a potential goal was unsuccessful.
  • The Black Knights regained their three-goal lead with Hunter McCoy's second goal of the night.
  • At the halfway point, Michael Craig brought RMU back within two, firing a shot from the blue line. Greg Japchen and Garvey added assists on the play.
 
THIRD PERIOD
  • The Colonials made it a one-goal game early in the third when Michael Felsing scored off a pass from McKay Hayes.
  • Army regained momentum with a power play goal and sealed the victory with an empty-net tally by Jack Ivey.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • RMU outshot Army 35-26 and held a 53% edge in faceoffs (35-31).
  • Cameron Garvey and Walter Zacher led the Colonials with four shots on goal each. Garvey also had a stellar night at the faceoff circle, winning 17 draws at a 65.4% clip.
  • Garvey and Krotiris finished with a team-best +2 rating.
  • In net, junior Dylan Meilun made nine saves before being replaced by Dawson Smith, who stopped 11 shots.
 
UP NEXT
RMU will aim to split the series in game two against Army. Puck drop is scheduled for 5:00 PM on Saturday, January 25 at Clearview Arena.
