Colonials Extend Win Streak to Four Games, Defeat Wright State 74-53

Murray scores team-high 16 points

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU women's basketball team extended their winning streak to four games as the Colonials defeated Wright State, 74-53. The Colonials are 9-12 on the season and have moved to 5-7 in Horizon League play.

FIRST QUARTER
  • The Colonials got off to a fast start to this game making their first four field goals of the game. Mya Murray led the charge as she scored eight of RMU's first 13 points of the game.
  • The difference in the quarter was in the paint where RMU had the advantage with eight rebounds compared to three for Wright State. The Colonials also scored 10 points in the paint while the Raiders scored four.
  • RMU's highlight of the quarter was a slick steal and breakaway layup from Jada Lee as that was one of five Raider turnovers in the stanza. The Colonials finished the frame with a 17-12 lead.
SECOND QUARTER
  • The Colonials looked for separation from the Raiders in this quarter and found it by continuing to play stout defense and creating good looks from the field.
  • Halfway through the frame with RMU owning a six point lead the Colonials would go on a 11-0 run and flipped the game upside down.
  • RMU went to the half with a 35-24 lead thanks in large part to scoring 10 points off of Wright State turnovers while the Raiders just scored one point in the stanza off of a Colonial turnover.
THIRD QUARTER
  • RMU arguably played their most complete quarter of the game outscoring Wright State 23-11 and only having two turnovers in the frame.
  • Raissa Nsabua, Isys Grady, and Naomi Barnwell each scored a team-high six points in the quarter while playing standout defense.
  • RMU controlled both ends of the floor and at one point in the frame had a 25-point lead which was their largest of the game.
 FOURTH QUARTER
  • The Colonials didn't have to take many shots in the quarter with a commanding lead but still shot their highest percentage of the game at 66 percent.
  • Mya Murray and Alejandra Mastral each had four points in the frame and contributed to the Colonials shooting 7-8 from the free-throw line.
  • From start to finish the Colonials controlled the paint out rebounding the Raiders 38-19 in the game and that helped RMU defeat Wright State, 74-53.

STACKING WINS
The Colonials are in the midst of a four-game win streak in Horizon League play after defeating Wright State. This is the longest conference win streak for the Colonials since they joined the Horizon League during the 2020 season. RMU has shot over 50 percent from the field in three out of the four games on this win streak.

QUOTABLES
Head Coach Chandler McCabe spoke after the game about what she's seen from her team the past four games, "But, you know, quite frankly, the two words are execution and pace. Those are the only things we changed. So, playing harder, wanting it more, being tougher. Since that one in seven start, we have not done anything different defensively. We got back to Robert Morris basketball. Instead of oh, key in on this player, focus on this player. It's Robert Morris basketball team, defense, execute and have better pace and play a little bit harder. And that's, you know, translated to 4-0, in the last four games, which is cool, but nobody cares. We have a game on Friday, and that's what's most important." McCabe then spoke about the different way her team has won recently and what worked tonight, "So today, the name of the game that we call it the magic number, right? The magic number was rebounds. And if we were able to beat them heavily on the rebounding battle, we knew we would win. And then, yeah, the magic number against, you know, I think it was Oakland was points in the paint. They're really buying into doing. But quite frankly, in those four wins, we have been rebounding the ball. When you look look at Green Bay and Cleveland State stats, they killed us on rebounds. And that's not who we are. So, you know, you do the dirty work and you'll be rewarded." McCabe closed her statement by speaking about facing top Horizon League opponent Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday night, "We cannot turn the ball over 21 times. That's period, point blank. And I think our girls are ready. We have a great staff for a one-day turnaround, so I'm excited about that. But you know, for us, as long as we're out rebounding, we're playing harder, we're getting those 50/50 balls we can play with anyone."

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Graduate forward Mya Murray led the way for RMU as she had a team-high 16 points to go along with six rebounds. Katelyn Chomko came off the bench and provided a spark from beyond the arc as she had 12 points while going 4-5 from 3P. Isys Grady hit double digits as she had 11 points and four rebounds in the winning effort. Raissa Nsabua flirted with a double-double as she finished the game with eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
