Colonials Fall Short at Home to Purdue Fort Wayne, 63-54

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – RMU women's basketball fell at home against conference-leading Purdue Fort Wayne, 63-54. The Colonials are now 9-13 on the season and fell to 5-8 in Horizon League play. 

FIRST QUARTER
  • Both teams struggled to score coming out of the gate with each squad going a combined 0-9 from the floor in the first three minutes of the game. Isys Grady broke the scoreless tie with a three-pointer as she had 11 first-half points.
  • The Colonials defense came prepared as they held the Mastodons scoreless up until the 6:37 mark of the quarter.
  • RMU is the only Horizon League team this season to hold Purdue Fort Wayne to single digits scoring in a quarter as the Colonials only allowed eight points in the frame.
SECOND QUARTER
  • The Mastodons bounced back on the offensive side in this frame as they shot 60 percent from the field while making seven trips at the free-throw line.
  • RMU couldn't get into a rhythm offensively but controlled the glass by an 11-5 margin which helped them on second chance opportunities.
  • The Colonials defense was the key factor by allowing the second lowest point total for the Mastodons in a half this season as RMU held Purdue Fort Wayne to 26 points. The visitors went to the break with a one-point lead.
THIRD QUARTER
  • RMU's defense continued to be stout as the Mastodons only shot 23 percent from the floor and went a game-low 0-5 from 3P in the quarter.
  • Both teams traded shots in the middle portion of the frame and the Colonials would end up with a five-point lead with five minutes remaining.
  • Each team struggled to find the bottom of the net at the end of the quarter with both squads being held scoreless for three minutes until a Naomi Barnwell free-throw tied the game with 25 seconds left in the frame.
 FOURTH QUARTER
  • Purdue Fort Wayne punched back in this stanza shooting a game-high 69 percent in this quarter. The Mastodons controlled the paint with 14 points scored in the interior while the Colonials had four.
  • The Colonials tried to battle back and went 3-5 from beyond the arc with Mya Murray and Noa Givon providing the outside threat.
  • RMU had to resort to fouling in the final stages as the Mastodons would defeat the Colonials, 63-54.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Senior Isys Grady led the Colonials with 13 points as she had a big first half scoring 11 of those points. Raissa Nsabua filled the stat sheet as she had 11 points to go along with a team-high five assists, six rebounds, and a steal. The biggest statistic to note from this game for RMU as they held the Mastodons to their lowest scoring percentage out of any Horizon League opponent to date at 38.7 percent.
