Colonials Drop Series Opener to Mercyhurst, 4-2

Elliott tallies two goals; Krotiris records two assists

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. The RMU men's hockey team posted more chances but came up short against Mercyhurst, falling 4-2 in the series opener Friday night at Clearview Arena. The loss drops the Colonials to 9-15-3 overall and 6-11-2 in Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) play.
 
FIRST PERIOD
  • Mercyhurst struck early, scoring just 17 seconds into the game as Ryan Coughlin buried a rebound to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
  • RMU responded with a dominant shift from Dominic Elliott, as the freshman defenseman scored twice in a one-minute span.
  • Elliott's first goal came from the left-side wall, assisted by George Krotiris and Trevor LeDonne.
  • Just a minute later, Elliott struck again on the power play, this time assisted by Krotiris and Gavin Gulash, putting RMU ahead 2-1.
  • The Colonials outshot Mercyhurst 18-8 and converted on their lone power play opportunity while killing the Lakers' only man-advantage.
 
SECOND PERIOD
  • The Lakers responded just 11 seconds into the period, with Mickey Burns scoring from distance to tie the game at 2-2.
  • RMU controlled much of the frame, outshooting Mercyhurst 15-13 and holding a 16-10 advantage in faceoffs, but couldn't reclaim the lead.
 
THIRD PERIOD
  • The Colonials dominated the first 10 minutes, firing 13 shots on goal before Mercyhurst registered its first attempt of the period.
  • The Lakers capitalized on a power play opportunity, with Steven Agriogianis scoring the go-ahead goal to make it 3-2.
  • RMU pulled its goaltender in the final minutes but couldn't find the equalizer. Mercyhurst's Tyler DesRochers sealed the win with an empty-net goal at 19:26, securing the 4-2 victory for the visitors.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • RMU outshot Mercyhurst 48-26 and dominated in the faceoff circle, winning 59.2% of draws (45-31).
  • Both teams converted one power-play goal.
  • Freshman defenseman Dominic Elliott led RMU with eight shots on goal.
  • Trevor LeDonne and Luke van Why blocked three shots each, while Cameron Garvey won a team-high 14 faceoffs.
  • In net, freshman Croix Kochendorfer recorded 22 saves.
 
ELITE GAME FROM ELLIOTT
Freshman defenseman Dominic Elliott recorded his first career two-goal game, continuing his standout rookie season. This was his fifth career multipoint effort. Elliott leads all AHA freshman defensemen in scoring, now up to six goals, 10 assists, and 16 points this season.
 
MULTIPOINT PERFORMANCE
Sophomore forward George Krotiris had a two-assist night, marking his third career multipoint effort. In 60 career games, he has eight goals, 11 assists, and 19 points.
