MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU men's hockey team battled to a 3-3 tie against Mercyhurst but fell in the shootout, 3-2, with the Lakers earning the extra point in the Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) standings. The Colonials are now 9-15-4 overall and 6-11-3 in AHA play.
FIRST PERIOD
- After a scoreless first 15 minutes, RMU broke through on the power play as George Krotiris finished a tic-tac-toe passing play from Michael Felsing and Dominic Elliott for his third goal of the season.
- RMU controlled both ends of the ice, outshooting Mercyhurst 12-1 in the opening frame.
SECOND PERIOD
- Mercyhurst tied the game early in the second as Dustin Geregach blasted in a shot from the point.
- The Colonials quickly responded just one minute later, with Walter Zacher ripping in his 13th goal of the season off assists from Michael Craig and Cameron Garvey.
- With six minutes left in the period, RMU extended its lead on the power play as Mitch Deelstra netted his team-leading eighth power-play goal of the season. Assists came from Zacher and Luke van Why.
- Mercyhurst outshot RMU 11-10 in the period, but the Colonials successfully killed off both of the Lakers' power-play opportunities.
THIRD PERIOD
- Mercyhurst mounted a comeback halfway through the final period, with Mickey Burns scoring twice in a span of two minutes to even the game at 3-3.
- Both teams had one more power play opportunity but failed to convert, sending the contest to overtime.
OVERTIME
- In the 3-on-3 extra frame, RMU had four shots on goal compared to Mercyhurst's three, but neither side could net the game-winner.
SHOOTOUT
- RMU received shootout goals from Zacher and Cody Monds, but Mercyhurst scored three times on five attempts to win the shootout 3-2, securing the extra point in the standings.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- RMU outshot Mercyhurst 37-27 and won 63.3% of faceoffs (43-25).
- Trent Wilson and Cameron Garvey each won a team-high 17 faceoffs.
- Zacher led the Colonials with five shots on goal.
- RMU finished 2-for-4 on the power play, while the penalty-kill remained perfect, going 3-for-3.
- Michael Craig and Garvey each finished with a +1 rating.
- Goaltender Dylan Meilun made 24 saves in net.
