TEMPE, Ariz. – The RMU men's hockey team fell to ASU in the first game of the ASU Desert Classic, 7-3. The Colonials are now 8-8-2 overall.
FIRST PERIOD
- ASU got off to a quick start as Ryan Kirwan scored the first goal of the game 35 seconds in.
- The remainder of the period was scoreless with the Sun Devils leading in shots 11-3.
SECOND PERIOD
- Kirwan extended the lead for ASU with another quick goal entering the middle frame.
- Cullen Potter then scored two consecutive goals for the Sun Devils, extending their lead to 4-0.
- RMU then got on the board before the period ended as Mitch Deelstra sniped in a shot with an assist from Luke van Why.
THIRD PERIOD
- In the final period, both teams had more chances as ASU scored three more.
- Deelstra added in his second of the game with assists from Michael Felsing and Trent Wilson.
- With a minute left, Michael Craig sniped in his fourth of the season with an assist from co-captain Cameron Garvey, but the Colonials fell 7-3.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
ASU outshot RMU 35-25 and the home team also held the edge in faceoffs, winning 39 of 67. Deelstra had his first two-goal game of the season for the Colonials and second multipoint effort. In net, junior netminder
Dylan Meilun had 28 saves between the pipes.
