MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – A late surge by the Robert Morris football team was not enough to overcome an early deficit, as they fell to Central Connecticut State University 24-12 on Saturday at Joe Walton Stadium.
Despite the loss, RMU wide receiver
Chaz Middleton had a career day, hauling in six catches for a career-high 186 yards and a touchdown.
The Blue Devils jumped out to an early lead, scoring 14 points in the first quarter and adding another touchdown in the third to take a 24-0 lead. The scoring included a 55-yard interception return for a touchdown by Devon Anderson.
The Colonials mounted a comeback attempt in the fourth quarter. The rally began with a 44-yard touchdown pass from quarterback
Jake Wolfe to Middleton. Following a successful onside kick recovery, the Colonials drove down the field again, capping the drive with a 7-yard touchdown run by
Donta Whack to make it a 24-12 game.
However, a missed extra point and a failed two-point conversion kept it a two-score game, and the Blue Devils added an insurance field goal with 4:24 left to make it 24-12.
On the defensive side of the ball for the Colonials, linebacker Patrick McDonell had a standout performance, leading the team with 10 tackles.
Central Connecticut State was led by running back Elijah Howard, who rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown.
RMU will play the next three games on the road beginning with LIU on October 18. They head to Loretto, Pa. to face Saint Francis on October 25 before wrapping up their roadtrip at Stonehill on November 1. The next home game is November 8 against Wagner.
