NEWARK, Del. – The Colonials women's hockey team posted a second consecutive shutout as they blanked the Delaware Blue Hens on Saturday afternoon by a score of 5-0. The Colonials now head back to Robert Morris with a 5-5 overall record and 3-1 mark in conference play.
FIRST PERIOD
The Colonials came out strong on the offensive side for the second consecutive day as RMU out shot the Blue Hens 17-4 in the frame.
It wasn't until 10 minutes into the period when the RMU efforts paid off as
Morgan Giannone found the back of the net for the third straight game. Giannone was set up by
Taylor Storey who notched her fifth assist of the season.
SECOND PERIOD
The Colonials continued their torrid pace on offense as less than four minutes into the frame it was
Jessica MacKinnon who rifled home a one-timer that was set up perfectly by Giannone.
Delaware ended up a woman down on the powerplay in the 12
th minute when
Alaina Giampietro snapped the puck into the back of the net off a give and go from Mackinnon. RMU ended the period on yet another goal from Mackinnon, this time off a near breakaway from Giampietro that ricocheted off the goaltender and right onto the waiting stick of Mackinnon.
THIRD PERIOD
RMU continued to own the time of possession and once more it was Giampietro who found the puck and tallied her second goal of the day and team-leading third point of the game in the ninth minute.
Delaware tried to gain offensive momentum but it was
Maggie Hatch who came up with eight saves in the period to help secure her first shutout of the season.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- This is the first time the Colonials have posted back-to-back shutouts since Feb. 20-21, 2021 against Sacred Heart
