MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU women's hockey team was held off the scoresheet against an undefeated No. 6 Penn State squad, falling 4-0 Friday afternoon at Clearview Arena. With the result, the Colonials move to 5-6-0 overall and 3-2-0 in conference play.
FIRST PERIOD
Neither team found the back of the net through the opening 20 minutes, as Penn State outshot RMU 8-6 in a tightly contested first period.
Both sides had one power-play opportunity but failed to capitalize. The Colonials came close in the final minute, as
Catriona Crarer,
Taylor Storey, and
Alaina Giampietro each had quality chances that narrowly missed the target.
SECOND PERIOD
The Nittany Lions took control in the middle frame, outshooting RMU 19-2. Just over a minute into the period, Grace Outwater opened the scoring to give Penn State the lead.
Late in the frame, the Nittany Lions converted on their third power-play opportunity as Katelyn Roberts doubled the advantage with three minutes remaining, sending RMU into the second intermission trailing 2-0.
THIRD PERIOD
Six minutes into the final stanza, Mikah Keller added an even-strength tally to make it 3-0 Penn State.
The Colonials pulled their goaltender in the final two minutes, but Penn State's Tessa Janecke sealed the win with an empty-net goal.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Penn State outshot RMU 38-15. Giampietro led the Colonials with seven shots on goal.
- On special teams, the Nittany Lions finished 1-for-4 on the power play, while RMU went 0-for-2.
- RMU held a slight edge in the faceoff circle, winning 30 of 59 draws (50.8%). Sophomore Jessica MacKinnon led the way with 13 faceoff wins and a 56.5% success rate.
- Junior goaltender Maggie Hatch recorded 34 saves — her third 30-plus save performance this season and the 35th of her career.
CAREER-HIGH PERFORMANCE
Defenseman
Shayne Desjardins blocked a career-high 14 shots, bringing her total to 41 on the season — second-most in Atlantic Hockey America. As a freshman, she also finished second in the conference with 91 blocks, giving her 132 in her career.
