Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Tigers Outlast the Colonials to Split Series

MacKinnon and Giannone extend point streaks to five games

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Despite a determined late push, the RMU women's hockey team came up short in the series finale at RIT, falling 6-3 on Saturday afternoon. The setback moves the Colonials to 7-12-1 overall and 5-6-1 in Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) play.

FIRST PERIOD
RMU generated several early looks, but it was the Tigers who broke through first. On their opening power-play opportunity, RIT's nation-ranked No. 2 unit converted when Linda Rulle buried the game's first goal.

Even though the Colonials trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes, they controlled much of the period, outshooting RIT by a 12-5 margin.

SECOND PERIOD
RMU opened the frame with a strong penalty kill, but momentum swung back to RIT shortly after as the Tigers doubled their lead.

At the midway point, the Colonials finally punched back. A chaotic net-front play was initially never called a goal, but following a coach's challenge, video review confirmed the puck crossed the line. Linnea Misner was credited with the goal, with Morgan Giannone and Alaina Giampietro collecting assists to pull RMU within one.

RMU's penalty kill responded again later in the period, but RIT regrouped quickly and struck twice in a span of under 50 seconds to build a 4-1 advantage.

However, the Colonials answered immediately. Off a Tiger turnover, Jessica MacKinnon capitalized on a breakaway, slipping the puck through the goaltender's pads to make it a 4-2 game heading into the second intermission.

THIRD PERIOD
MacKinnon picked up right where she left off. Five minutes into the third, she struck on the power play—her second goal of the afternoon—with Giannone and Misner providing the helpers to cut the deficit to one.

RMU soon earned another power play and peppered RIT with 10 shot attempts during the two-minute sequence, but the Tigers held strong.

Midway through the period, RIT found an insurance marker to push the lead back to 5-3. The Tigers later sealed the game with an empty-net tally, evening the weekend series.

  • Goaltender Maggie Hatch finished with 13 saves.
