Hatch’s Shutout & D’Elia’s Goal Lead RMU to Victory at Syracuse

Hatch reaches 2,000 career saves en route to sixth career shutout

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Goaltender Maggie Hatch turned in a milestone performance and defenseman Thalia D'Elia delivered the lone goal as the Colonials opened their series at Syracuse with a 1-0 win Friday night. With the victory, RMU moves to 8-12-1 overall and 6-6-1 in Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) play.

FIRST PERIOD
The opening 20 minutes played out evenly, with neither side able to convert. RMU generated the period's best chance midway through as captain Alaina Giampietro slipped a backhand off the post.

Both teams earned a power play opportunity but were turned aside. Syracuse held a 12-5 edge in shots.

SECOND PERIOD
The scoreless duel continued through the second frame. RMU pushed the pace late and earned a power play in the closing minutes, but the Orange penalty kill held strong.

The Colonials outshot Syracuse 13-10 in the period.

THIRD PERIOD
RMU finally broke through on its third power play of the night. After drawing a hooking call early in the third, the Colonials capitalized quickly. Off a clean faceoff win from Catriona Crarer, D'Elia stepped into a shot from the point that found its way through traffic for a 1-0 lead.

From there, RMU's defense and Hatch closed the door. Hatch stopped all 13 shots she faced in the period, including a crucial penalty shot save with three minutes remaining.

Syracuse pulled its goaltender for the final two minutes and fired eight attempts toward the net, but only one reached Hatch, sealing the shutout victory.

MILESTONE REACHED
Redshirt junior goaltender Maggie Hatch surpassed 2,000 career saves on Friday, becoming just the third netminder in program history to hit the milestone. The Cleveland Heights, Ohio native also recorded her sixth career shutout. With three shutouts this season — a new single-season high — she ranks second in the AHA.
