Colonials Drop Heartbreaker to Oakland at Home

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – RMU dropped a heartbreaker to Oakland, falling 61-58 at home to the Grizzlies. The Colonials are now 9-3 overall and 2-1 in Horizon League play, while Oakland is 4-9 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
 
FIRST QUARTER
  • The Golden Grizzlies attacked first with Oakland's Makenzie Luehring getting a quick three from deep before RMU answered back with a layup by Bailey Kuhns to begin the scoring.
  • A layup by Eva Levingston, assisted by Bailey Kuhns, tied the game up a 6-6 with 6:31 left in the first half.
  • The Colonials went on a 9-0 run to find themselves up 13-6 with Levingston scoring four, Jennica Suggs scoring three, and Bailey Kuhns scoring two in the run.
  • Oakland answered back with a small run of its own, going 5-0 to cut RMU's lead down to two.
  • The Golden Grizzlies closed out the quarter with a layup with 17 seconds left on the clock to make it 16-13 going into the second quarter. 
SECOND QUARTER
  • Oakland took its first lead of the game following a 7-0 run by the Golden Grizzlies to go up over RMU 20-19 before Kuhns ended the run with a jump shot to make it 21-20 in favor of the Colonials.
  • The teams traded baskets back and forth before RMU took a five-point lead over the Grizzlies with 2:19 left in the half on a three-pointer by Kuhns.
  • A last-second basket by Oakland sent the game to the half with the Colonials out front 33-31.
THIRD QUARTER
  • Coming out of the half, the Golden Grizzlies tied the game up at 33-33 on a layup by Angie Smith before Myriam Traore got in on the action, hitting a wide-open three to put the Colonials back up 36-33.
  • Oakland and RMU traded three-pointers back and forth with Aislin Malcolm putting the Colonials up 39-36.
  • With 4:53 on the clock, the Golden Grizzlies retook the lead, up 42-41 over RMU, before Noa Givon hit a free-throw with 3:12 left in the quarter to tie the game back up.
  • The Golden Grizzlies closed out the quarter with a layup with nine seconds left on the clock to bring the contest within one going into the final 10 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
  • Both teams were neck and neck, with the Colonials holding a slim 51-50 lead over the Golden Grizzlies until the Colonials went on 9-0 run to find themselves out 58-50 with 4:41 on the clock.
  • Oakland flipped the script in the final four minutes of the game, going on an 11-0 run to upset the Colonials 61-58. Makenzie Luehring made a layup with 15 seconds remaining on the clock to put the Golden Grizzlies up 59-58 before a pair of free throws put Oakland up three.
  • In the final quarter of play, the Colonials shot 33.3% from the floor while Oakland shot 37.5% on 6-for-16 shooting.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
Bailey Kuhns had a huge night, recording a double-double with a team and game-leading 23 points and 12 rebounds. Noa Givon was the only other Colonial to score in double-digits with 10 points. On the glass, following Kuhns was Myriam Traore with 11 rebounds to round out major statistics for the Colonials.
 
On the afternoon, the Colonials shot 37.3% from the floor while scoring 16 points off the bench and 22 points in the paint. RMU held a 47-30 advantage in rebounding over the Golden Grizzlies, with Layla Gold pulling down seven to lead Oakland.
 
UP NEXT
The Colonials will return to play in the new year as RMU travels to Milwaukee on Friday night to face off with the Panthers at the Klotsche Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
