MILWAUKEE, Wis. – A double-double from
Myriam Traore and 18 points from
Aislin Malcolm helped the Colonials open the new year with a 62-52 Horizon League win over Milwaukee on the road on Friday night. The Colonials now sit at 10-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
FIRST QUARTER
- A quick 6-0 run by the Colonials, featuring Aislin Malcolm going 4-for-4 from the free throw line, quickly put the Colonials up 8-2 with 4:55 left in the first quarter.
- With 1:41 left on the clock, the Colonials extended their lead to a quarter-high 10 points on a made three from Jada Lee to lead Milwaukee 16-6.
- Milwaukee went on a 5-0 run to cut the Colonials' lead down to five before Malcolm put RMU back up by seven on a pull-up jumper to put RMU out front 18-11 going into the second quarter.
- RMU shot 40% in the first quarter, while going a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. The Colonials pulled down nine rebounds while Milwaukee grabbed seven.
SECOND QUARTER
- The teams traded baskets to begin the second half until a 5-0 run by the Panthers cut the Colonials' lead down to four as Madison Fitzgibbon knocked down a three to make it 24-20 in favor of RMU.
- Another Panther 5-0 run put Milwaukee within two as Grace Lomen knocked down a three-point shot following an RMU turnover to make it 30-28.
- A deep three from Milwaukee's Payton Rechlicz with 46 seconds on the clock made it 33-31 before a made free throw by the Panthers cut RMU's lead down to just one, with the Colonials carrying a 33-32 lead into the half.
- In the second quarter, the Panthers found their stride from deep as Milwaukee went 4-for-5 from beyond the arc to cut into the Colonials' lead. The Panthers shot 53.5% from the floor in the second quarter, while RMU shot 46.2%
THIRD QUARTER
- Milwaukee took its first lead of the matchup on a layup by Buwalda early in the third quarter to give the Panthers a 34-33 lead.
- A pair of free throws by Eva Levingston tied the game back up at 38-38 with 6:06 left on the clock before the Panthers hit their six three-point shot of the night to go back up 41-38.
- The Colonials knocked down another four free throw shots to go up 46-44 before Milwaukee got a second-chance layup to tie the game up 46-46 going into the fourth quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
- The Colonials got on the board first in the final frame as Jada Lee found Malcolm for a quick three to put RMU back up 49-46 before Milwaukee hit its eighth three of the contest to tie it back up 49-49 with 7:15 left to go.
- RMU put together a 4-0 run before the media timeout at 5:21 to go up 53-49 over Milwaukee following a second-chance layup by Myriam Traore.
- The Colonials closed out the contest on a 13-3 run over the final 6:55 to come away with the 62-52 win. RMU held Milwaukee scoreless for over six minutes in the final quarter until the Panthers got a final three from Rita Gomes to end the scoring drought.
- Over the final quarter, the Colonials went 5-for-8 from the charity stripe while shooting 38.5% from the floor. RMU held Milwaukee to just 16.7% shooting in the final frame, with the Panthers becoming cold from deep, going just 2-for-10.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
Aislin Malcolm led all scorers with 18 points on the night, including going 6-for-8 from the free-throw stripe. Malcolm also recorded four rebounds and two assists in the win. Sophomore
Myriam Traore recorded her first double-double as a Colonial, putting up 14 points and grabbing 10 boards in 34 minutes of action. Traore also recorded three steals and an assist.
Jada Lee (11) and
Bailey Kuhns (10) were the other Colonials to score in double-digits on the night.
As a team, the Colonials shot 38.9% on the night, going 21-for-54 from the floor. RMU held a slim 35-31 advantage on the boards while also forcing 14 Milwaukee turnovers compared to the Colonials' 10. RMU led the game for 30:05 minutes while the game featured eight lead changes and five ties.

The Colonials will wrap up their road trip with a matchup against Green Bay on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Kress Center. Green Bay currently sits a 10-5 overall and a perfect 5-0 in Horizon League play following its thrilling 58-55 win over Cleveland State on Friday night.
