MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Special teams made the difference as No. 8 Penn State scored three goals on special teams, leading to a 5-2 victory over RMU in the series finale. The Colonials fall to 8-19-3 overall and 2-12-2 in Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) play.
FIRST PERIOD
- The Nittany Lions struck first on the power play, with Abby Stonehouse scoring at the halfway point to take a 1-0 lead.
- Goaltender Lucy Phillips was stellar in net, making 24 saves in the opening frame to keep the Colonials within one.
- RMU's penalty kill was heavily tested, successfully killing off two more Penn State power plays.
SECOND PERIOD
- Just over a minute into the second period, Penn State doubled their lead, as Nicole Hall capitalized on an unassisted effort to make it 2-0.
- RMU quickly responded 30 seconds later, with Janelle Evans finishing a feed from Lindsey Smolen to cut the deficit to 2-1.
- Special teams continued to play a major role, as Penn State converted on another power play, extending their lead to 3-1.
- The Colonials battled back once more, with Emma Goding scoring from the blue line to make it 3-2 before the end of the period. Smolen and Mya Kearns recorded assists on the goal.
THIRD PERIOD
- Penn State pulled away in the final frame with two more special teams' goals.
- Tessa Janecke scored shorthanded, restoring the Nittany Lions' two-goal advantage at 4-2.
- RMU had a golden opportunity with a 5-on-3 power play but weren't able to capitalize.
- Moments later, Penn State returned to the power play and struck again, as Leah Stecker scored to seal the 5-2 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Penn State outshot RMU 61-19 and dominated in the faceoff circle, winning 66.7% of draws (48-24).
- RMU finished the game 0-for-4 on the power play, while Penn State went 3-for-8.
- Janelle Evans led the Colonials in shots on goal (4).
- Shayne Desjardins and Mya Kearns each blocked six shots, helping RMU defensively.
- Kearns, Ashlyn Ham, and Lindsey Smolen each finished with a team-best +2 rating.

Lucy Phillips recorded a career-high 56 saves, the sixth-most in a single game in program history. The record is held by Goalie Coach
Emma Gorski, who stopped 66 shots in a 4-3 (OT) victory against Penn State last season.
