MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Despite outshooting Syracuse, the RMU women's hockey team fell 4-1 in the series opener on Friday night. The Colonials now hold an 8-20-3 overall record, including a 2-13-2 mark in Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) play.
FIRST PERIOD
- Syracuse struck early, scoring just 66 seconds into the game as Tatum White found the back of the net to put the Orange ahead 1-0.
- RMU responded midway through the period when Morgan Giannone set up Mya Neugent on a 2-on-1 breakaway, tying the game at 1-1. Freshman Shayne Desjardins picked up the secondary assist.
- Syracuse regained the lead five minutes later with a power-play goal.
- Late in the period, Syracuse goaltender Allie Kelley was assessed a game misconduct for contact to the head, leading to her ejection. Bella Gould stepped in between the pipes for the Orange, and RMU was awarded a five-minute power play.
SECOND PERIOD
- The Colonials pressured early in the period with the extended man-advantage but were unable to convert.
- Shortly after, RMU found itself in a similar situation as Laura Eustace was handed a game misconduct for contact to the head, giving Syracuse a five-minute power play.
- The Orange capitalized on the opportunity, extending their lead to 3-1 courtesy of Nea Tervonen.
- Syracuse outshot RMU 15-6 in the middle frame.
THIRD PERIOD
- RMU pressed hard in the final frame, earning four power-play opportunities and registering 11 shots on goal compared to Syracuse's four, but could not break through.
- Syracuse sealed the win with an empty-net goal in the final six seconds, making it a 4-1 final.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- RMU outshot Syracuse 29-26 but struggled to convert on special teams, going 0-for-6 on the power play.
- Syracuse won 52.9% of faceoffs and finished 2-for-6 on the power play.
- Morgan Giannone led the Colonials with seven shots on goal, while Catriona Crarer won a team-high eight faceoffs.
- Goaltender Maggie Hatch recorded 22 saves in the loss.
