RMU Women's Hockey Hosts Syracuse

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa.The RMU women's hockey team continues its homestand this weekend, hosting Syracuse for a two-game series at Clearview Arena. The series kicks off on Friday, February 7, at 7:00 PM, followed by the finale on Saturday, February 8, at 3:00 PM. Both games will stream live on FloHockey, while Saturday's game will also air on SportsNet Pittsburgh with commentary from Gero von Dehn and Bob Kennedy.
 
RMU LATELY
RMU (8-19-3, 2-12-2 AHA) aims to rebound after dropping a series to No. 8 Penn State. Despite the setbacks, the Colonials saw key contributions in game two, with Janelle Evans (5th goal of the season) and Emma Goding (4th goal) finding the back of the net. Ashlyn Ham, Lindsey Smolen, and Mya Kearns each recorded an assist. Goaltender Lucy Phillips made a career-high 56 saves, the sixth-most in a single game in program history.
 
MILESTONE WATCH
Junior forward Morgan Giannone is set to hit a career milestone this weekend. With 98 career games played, her 100th collegiate game will take place on Saturday. This season, she leads RMU with 8 goals, 10 assists, and 18 points. Over her career, she has recorded 16 goals, 20 assists, and 36 points, with 10 multipoint games.
 
BLOCK PARTY
RMU leads the nation in blocked shots (615), with more than 120 blocks separating them from the next closest team. Graduate defenseman Allyson Hebert (89 blocks) and freshman Shayne Desjardins (78 blocks) rank first and second nationally. Hebert has contributed four assists, while Desjardins has one goal and five assists this season.
 
ALL-TIME VS. SYRACUSE
Since 2008, RMU and Syracuse have met 62 times, with RMU holding a 28-25-9 (.524) record.
  • At Clearview Arena, RMU is 11-10-7 against the Orange.
  • RMU has averaged 2.26 goals per game and recorded nine shutouts in the series.
  • Earlier this season, Syracuse won both meetings at home by a 4-1 scoreline. Mya Neugent and Lindsey Smolen scored for the Colonials in those games.
 
SCOUTING SYRACUSE
Syracuse (10-20-0, 8-8-0 AHA) enters the series on a three-game win streak. Graduate forward Bryn Saarela leads the team with 13 goals and 24 points. Jackson Kinsler and Sami Gendron share the team lead in assists (12). Saarela, Kinsler, and Charli Kettyle each have four power-play goals, while Saarela has also scored two shorthanded goals. Freshman defenseman Jessica Cheung leads the team in blocked shots (58). In net, graduate goalie Allie Kelley has been a steady presence, posting a .927 save percentage in 29 games with nine wins and three shutouts.
