Colonials Fall to Syracuse in Series Finale

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU women's hockey team dropped the second game of its weekend series against Syracuse, falling 5-1 on Saturday afternoon. The loss moves the Colonials to 8-21-3 overall and 2-14-2 in Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) play.
 
FIRST PERIOD
  • For the second straight game, Syracuse struck early, as Nea Tervonen scored on the first shot of the contest.
  • RMU responded with strong offensive pressure, outshooting the Orange 12-2 for the remainder of the period.
  • With two minutes left in the frame, the Colonials found the equalizer. Laura Eustace forced a turnover in the defensive zone, carried the puck up ice, and set up Catriona Crarer on the rush. Crarer buried her fourth goal of the season to make it 1-1.
 
SECOND PERIOD
  • The Orange regained the lead just 90 seconds into the period, as Stella Costabile converted on an unassisted effort.
  • Later in the frame, Heidi Knoll capitalized on a breakaway opportunity, extending Syracuse's advantage to 3-1.
  • Syracuse outshot RMU 17-6 in the period.
 
THIRD PERIOD
  • The Colonials nearly cut into the deficit early in the frame, as Crarer and Eustace created a scramble in front of the net, but RMU couldn't push the puck across the line.
  • Minutes later, Syracuse added another tally to make it 4-1.
  • RMU pulled its goaltender with five minutes left in regulation, but the Orange sealed the game with an empty-net goal for the 5-1 final.
 
BY THE NUMBERS  
MILESTONE MOMENT
Junior forward Morgan Giannone skated in her 100th career game, becoming the latest Colonial to reach the milestone. The Oakville, Ontario native has recorded 16 goals, 21 assists, and 37 points in her collegiate career.
 
UP NEXT
The Colonials close out the regular season with a home series against Lindenwood next weekend. The series opener is set for Friday, February 14 at 7:00 PM, with the finale scheduled for Senior Day on Saturday, February 15 at 12:00 PM.
