MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – A pair of early runs by Oakland proved to be the difference as the RMU softball team fell in its home opener, 3-1, Thursday afternoon. The Colonials now sit at 4-9 overall and 0-1 in Horizon League play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first inning, the Golden Grizzlies struck in the top of the second, drawing back-to-back walks before producing two RBI singles to take a 2-0 lead.
Neither team would score over the next two innings, with RMU recording its first hit in the bottom of the fourth on a single from
Courtney Poulich.
The Colonials cut the deficit in half in the fifth.
Jess Matheny reached base via a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Sequoia Dunlap. Pinch hitter
Jaimee Hardy followed with a single to left, setting up
Katlyn Jardine, who knocked a base hit up the middle to bring in Matheny and make it a 2-1 game.
Oakland responded in the sixth, plating an insurance run to extend the lead to 3-1.
RMU registered one hit in each of the final two innings, including a deep fly ball from
Alaina Koutsogiani that came just feet short of clearing the fence, but the Colonials were unable to push across another run.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Oakland edged RMU in hits, 6-5, and left six runners on base compared to the Colonials' five. Poulich, Hardy, Resnik, and both Jardine sisters each recorded a hit. Matheny scored the lone run for RMU and reached base twice via a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Dunlap contributed three assists from her spot at shortstop.
