RMU Softball Falls Short Against Belmont

NASHVILLE, Tenn. The RMU softball team wrapped up its weekend at the Music City Classic, falling to Belmont 5-4 in game one and 8-0 in game two. The Colonials now hold a 4-8 overall record as they prepare for the start of Horizon League play next week.
 
GAME 1: RMU 4, Belmont 5
Belmont took control early, scoring three runs in the first inning to grab an early lead.
 
RMU responded in the third as Anna Resnik reached base on an outfield error, allowing Katlyn Jardine to score an unearned run and cut the deficit to 3-1. The Colonials continued their push in the fourth when Mary Brant sparked a rally with a double to left center. Jess Matheny followed with an RBI single up the middle, and Sequoia Dunlap then doubled to drive in Matheny, tying the game at 3-3.
 
Belmont regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a run on a sacrifice fly, but RMU answered again in the fifth. Brant reached base after being hit by a pitch, stole second, and then scored on an Alaina Koutsogiani single to right field, tying the game at 4-4.
 
With the game still deadlocked in the bottom of the seventh, Belmont managed to bring home the game-winning run, sealing a 5-4 victory.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Belmont outhit RMU 10-5. Brant led the team with two runs scored, while Resnik, Koutsogiani, Matheny, and Dunlap each tallied an RBI. Madison DeVault pitched a complete game for RMU, throwing 141 pitches across seven innings.
 
GAME 2: RMU 0, Belmont 8
After a quiet first two innings, Belmont's offense came alive in the third, scoring six runs to take command of the game.
 
RMU's first hit came in the fourth when Brant singled, but the Colonials couldn't capitalize with runners on base. Belmont added two more runs in the fifth, enacting the run-rule for an 8-0 victory.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Belmont outhit RMU 6-1. The Bruins stranded seven runners on base, compared to RMU's two. Abby Quickel made her first start of the season as the designated player. Kaitlyn Molitoris started in the circle, throwing 2.1 innings with one strikeout, while Kailani Tatro provided 1.2 innings of relief. Madelyn Coleman recorded the final out in the fifth.
 
UP NEXT
RMU returns home to open Horizon League play with a three-game series against Oakland, scheduled for March 14-15 at the North Athletic Complex.
