RMU Softball Wins Series Opener Against Detroit Mercy, 4-1

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU softball team continued its strong run of form Saturday evening, earning a 4-1 victory over Detroit Mercy in the opening game of their Horizon League series at the North Athletic Complex. With the win, the Colonials improve to 20-11 overall and 12-3 in conference play.

The Colonials threatened early, as leadoff hitter Kaylyn Hopf opened the bottom of the first with a single and promptly stole second. However, three consecutive flyouts to right field left her stranded.

In the second inning, RMU capitalized. Alaina Koutsogiani led off with a single, followed by another base hit from Jess Matheny. Freshman Sequoia Dunlap laid down a sacrifice bunt, reaching safely on a throwing error by the Titans pitcher. Both Koutsogiani and Matheny came around to score on the play, and Dunlap advanced to third. Katlyn Jardine followed with a well-placed RBI single to give the Colonials a 3-0 advantage.

Detroit Mercy got on the board in the third inning with their only run of the game, but RMU responded swiftly. In the bottom of the frame, Koutsogiani launched a solo home run to left center—her third homer of the season—restoring the three-run lead.

Pitcher Kaitlyn Molitoris kept the Titans quiet over the next three innings, retiring batter after batter with command and poise. After recording the first two outs in the seventh, Madison DeVault came in to collect the final out and her first save of the season.
