MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU softball team dropped both games of Sunday's doubleheader against Detroit Mercy, falling by scores of 9-5 and 4-1. With the setbacks, the Colonials move to 20-13 overall and 12-5 in Horizon League play.
 
GAME 1: RMU 5, Detroit Mercy 9
RMU came out swinging in the first inning as 
Anna Resnik led off with a triple to left field. After 
Mary Brant drew a walk, the pair executed a double steal to score the game's first run.
 
Detroit Mercy answered with two runs in the second inning to take the lead and extended it with a big fifth inning, notching three consecutive RBI singles to go ahead 5-1.
 
The Colonials responded in the bottom of the frame. After 
Courtney Poulich reached on catcher's interference and 
Alaina Koutsogiani singled, 
Jess Matheny delivered a three-run blast to deep right center—her fourth home run of the season—cutting the deficit to 5-4.
 
However, the Titans padded their lead with four more runs across the sixth and seventh innings, including a two-run homer. RMU attempted a late rally as Koutsogiani singled and later scored on a 
Sequoia Dunlap hit, but it wasn't enough as the Colonials dropped the opener 9-5.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
	- UDM outhit RMU 10-8; both teams committed one error.
- The Colonials left 10 runners on base, compared to Detroit Mercy's eight.
- Koutsogiani and Dunlap both went 3-for-4 at the plate.
- Matheny led the team with three RBI.
- Madelyn Coleman started in the circle and struck out four in 4.2 innings. Kaitlyn Molitoris and Sammie Borrayo combined for the final 2.1 innings.
GAME 2: RMU 1, Detroit Mercy 4
Game two was a pitchers' duel early, with RMU starter 
Madison DeVault striking out five of the first six batters.
 
The Titans broke the deadlock in the third with three straight hits to score two runs.
 
RMU cut the deficit in the sixth when Resnik doubled to center and scored on a single from Brant, making it 2-1.
 
Detroit Mercy capitalized on a defensive error in the seventh, followed by a bases-loaded walk to add two more runs and extend their lead to 4-1.
 
The Colonials attempted to mount a comeback after a 
Katlyn Jardine walk and 
Kaylyn Hopf single, but were unable to bring them home.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
	- Both teams tallied five hits, two walks, and one error.
- RMU stranded eight runners while Detroit Mercy left five.
- Hopf led the team with two hits; Brant had the lone RBI.
- DeVault threw a complete game, striking out eight and allowing three earned runs.

Junior 
Katlyn Jardine worked a walk in each game of the series. She now leads the Colonials in walks (18) and on-base percentage (.464).
 
UP NEXT 
The Colonials continue their homestand with a three-game Horizon League series against Purdue Fort Wayne, scheduled for April 18-19 at the North Athletic Complex.
