Colonials Earn First Win of 2025 Over USI

Marvin factors in on both goals

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season on Thursday, defeating the University of Southern Indiana (USI), 2-0. With the victory, the Colonials move to 1-1 to begin the 2025 campaign.

FIRST HALF
Just 14 minutes into the match, the Colonials created a prime scoring opportunity. A through ball was played into space for Taylor Day, who was dragged down just outside the 18-yard box. The foul resulted in a straight red card for USI's Brynn Quick, forcing the Screaming Eagles to play a player down for the rest of the match.

RMU capitalized on the advantage in the 34th minute. Freshman Bailey Campbell found senior right-back and captain Jillian Marvin making a run down the right side. Marvin sent in a perfect cross that found a diving Madison Hurst at the back post, who headed it into the net for her first career goal and a 1-0 RMU lead.

The Colonials continued to pressure, recording three more shots before halftime.

SECOND HALF
The second half began with both sides trading possession and corner kicks. However, in the 55th minute, the Colonials added an insurance goal.

The play started with Jillian Marvin playing a ball to Paloma Swankler in space. Swankler used her speed to get down the right side and placed a perfect cross into the box for freshman Sydney Chontos, who tapped it home for her first career goal and a 2-0 lead.

The physical play continued throughout the final 30 minutes, with both sides receiving yellow cards.

Despite five more shots from USI, the Colonials' defense held firm, securing the 2-0 victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Centerbacks Shauna Gamble and Emerson Johngarlo, along with midfielders Julia Becerra and Bailey Campbell, all played the full 90 minutes. Senior Malia Kearns played her first minutes of the season, recording one shot in 25 minutes of play.
