MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU women's hockey team capped off opening weekend with another strong offensive showing, defeating Assumption 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at Clearview Arena to secure their first series sweep of the 2025-26 season. With the victory, the Colonials improve to 2-0 to start the new campaign.
FIRST PERIOD
RMU wasted no time setting the tone, exploding for three goals in the opening frame.
Seven minutes into the contest, captain
Alaina Giampietro broke the deadlock with her second goal of the year. The play began with
Jessica MacKinnon forcing a turnover in the neutral zone before
Mya Farr slipped the puck ahead to Giampietro, who buried a slick backhander to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead.
Less than a minute later, RMU doubled their advantage. After cycling in the offensive zone,
Linnea Misner fed
Thalia D'Elia, who threaded a pass across the crease for
Taylor Storey, and she tapped home her first career goal to make it 2-0.
Before the first intermission, the Colonials struck again.
Shayne Desjardins fired a sharp wrist shot past the Assumption netminder, with assists credited to
Emma Goding and MacKinnon.
The Colonials' attack was relentless throughout the period, outshooting the Greyhounds 19-4 while controlling possession and dictating the pace of play.
SECOND PERIOD
Momentum briefly shifted early in the second as RMU ran into penalty trouble. Assumption capitalized on special teams, scoring on back-to-back power plays, including a tally just seconds after a 5-on-3 advantage, cutting the lead to 3-2.
Despite the penalties, RMU continued to generate chances, outshooting the Greyhounds 17-12 in the frame.
THIRD PERIOD
The Colonials regained control in the final stanza. Just over four minutes in, Giampietro struck again, finishing off a perfect feed from
Kaitlyn Schooley, with
Rowyn Ringor adding the secondary helper. The goal, Giampietro's second of the afternoon, reestablished a two-goal cushion at 4-2.
Ringor came close to adding another insurance marker, ringing the iron twice in the closing minutes.
