ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RMU men's hockey team battled through 60 minutes and into overtime Saturday night but ultimately fell to RIT, 3-2. With the overtime loss, the Colonials secured one point in the Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) standings and now sit at 4-14-2 overall and 4-7-1 in conference play.
FIRST PERIOD
The opening 20 minutes featured steady, back-and-forth play with limited scoring chances at both ends. Midway through the period, freshman
Bruce McDonald was sent to the box, but the Colonials successfully killed off the penalty.
McDonald quickly made amends late in the frame, scoring the first goal of his collegiate career with under two minutes remaining.
Jackson Reineke and
John Babcock picked up assists on the play as RMU carried a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
SECOND PERIOD
RIT responded quickly to start the middle frame, evening the score just 37 seconds in on a goal from Austin Brimmer.
Following the early tally, both teams earned a power-play opportunity but were unable to convert. Chances were limited for the remainder of the period as RIT narrowly outshot RMU, 7-6, in the stanza.
THIRD PERIOD
The Colonials came out with energy in the final period, generating multiple early chances, including a shot off the post by
Tanner Klimpke in the opening minute.
RMU reclaimed the lead later in the period on the power play.
Michael Felsing showcased a strong individual effort, splitting the Tigers' defense and finishing past the goaltender to make it 2-1.
Dominic Elliott and Reineke assisted on the goal.
RIT answered moments later, however, capitalizing on the man advantage as Christian Catalano scored to knot the game at two and force overtime.
OVERTIME
The Tigers controlled possession off the opening faceoff and ended the contest just 32 seconds into overtime when Evan Konyen found the back of the net.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- RIT outshot RMU, 29-26. Cameron Garvey paced the Colonials with five shots on goal.
- Freshman defenseman John Babcock was the lone player to finish with a plus rating (+1).
- RMU blocked 21 shots, led by Babcock's six. He recorded 11 blocks over the two-game series.
- Charlie Schenkel made 25 saves in net for the Colonials.
- RMU went 1-for-2 on the power play, while RIT finished 1-for-4.
FIRST CAREER GOAL
Freshman
Bruce McDonald scored his first collegiate goal against the Tigers. The Ottawa native continues to lead RMU in assists with eight and also won a team-high nine faceoffs in the contest.
MULTIPOINT EFFORT
Junior forward
Jackson Reineke recorded two assists, bringing his season totals to six goals, four assists and 10 points. The performance marked the ninth multipoint game of his career.
UP NEXT
The Colonials will continue their road swing next week with a two-game series at Army. Game one is set for Friday, January 16 at 7:00 PM, followed by the series finale on Saturday, January 17 at 4:00 PM. Both games will stream live on FloHockey.
