Colonials Secure First Ever Road Victory at IU Indy Behind Big Performances from Leroux and Kuhns

INDIANAPOLIS – The RMU women's basketball team secured its first-ever road win against the IU Indy Jaguars 76-71 on Sunday afternoon behind a career-high performance of 21 points by Ava Leroux and 20 points from forward Bailey Kuhns.
 
FIRST QUARTER
  • A 6-0 run by the Jaguars quickly put IU Indy up 8-4 over the Colonials following a layup by Olivia Smith with 7:13 on the clock.
  • RMU went on a run of its own in the first quarter, a 7-0 run giving the Colonials an 11-8 lead. Bailey Kuhns recorded five of the seven points in the run with a pair of layups and a made free throw.
  • The Colonials finished the first quarter on a 6-3 run, closing out the quarter with a 17-15 lead. Neither team was able to score in the final two minutes of the quarter.
  • In the first quarter, RMU shot 53.8% from the floor, going 7-for-13, while the Jaguars shot 38.9% on 7-for-18 shooting.
SECOND QUARTER
  • Back-to-back layups by Bailey Kuhns gave the Colonials a 21-18 lead with 6:45 to go.
  • IU Indy's Nevaeh Foster hit a big three-point basket with 5:24 on the clock to give the Jaguars a 23-22 lead before a layup by Myriam Traore gave the Colonials back the lead.
  • The Jaguars put together a 5-0 run to put themselves up 28-24 before a 5-0 run by the Colonials put RMU back out front 29-28.
  • Another 5-0 run by the Jaguars gave IU Indy a 33-29 lead before Aislin Malcolm broke up the run with a three-point basket to cut the Jaguars lead to just one, with the score 33-32 going into the half. 
THIRD QUARTER
  • The Colonials started the third quarter with back-to-back buckets from Eva Levingston and Kuhns to put RMU up by three before a pair of free throws by Olivia Smith gave IU Indy a 39-38 lead with 7:18 on the clock.
  • The Colonials posted their biggest run of the game, going on a 10-0 run with Ava Leroux scoring eight of the 10 for RMU to go up 48-39, their biggest lead of the contest.
  • Over the final four minutes, IU Indy outscored RMU 15-6. Jada Lee hit a pair of free throws to tie the game up at 54-54 going into the final quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
  • Over the first two minutes of the fourth quarter, the teams remained neck-in-neck with IU Indy edging the Colonials 7-6 in scoring, while RMU held a slight 61-60 lead after a pair of made free throws by Malcolm.
  • The teams remained within three points over the next four and a half minutes, with RMU edging out IU Indy 11-10. A layup by IU Indy's Destini Craig tied the game up at 71-71.
  • Free throws sealed the game for the Colonials in the final minute, with RMU going 5-for-6 from the charity stripe to secure the 76-71 victory over the Jaguars.
  • In the fourth quarter, the Colonials went 12-for-14 from the free throw line for 85.7% shooting.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
Ava Leroux had another huge night for the Colonials, putting up a new career high of 21 points and was perfect from the floor, shooting 100% (7-7) in the win. Leroux also went a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe along with four rebounds. Bailey Kuhns was the second-highest scorer for RMU, with the forward putting up 20 points in the win, marking her 10th double-digit scoring game of the season. Kuhns also pulled down six rebounds for RMU. Aislin Malcolm was the third Colonial to score double-digits, with Malcolm scoring 13 points along with four rebounds and three assists. On the glass, Myriam Traore and Jada Lee both pulled down a team-high seven rebounds each.
 
As a team, the Colonials shot 25-for-45 from the floor, shooting 55.6% on the afternoon. Free throws were a big factor in the matchup today, with both teams combining for 65 free throw attempts. RMU went 24-30 from the charity stripe to go 80% in the win, while IU Indy shot 65.7% from the line, going 23-for-35. RMU held a big advantage in the glass over IU Indy, beating the Jaguars 41-22 on the glass.
 
UP NEXT
RMU (15-7 overall, 8-5 Horizon League) will return to Moon Township for a two-game homestand beginning on Thursday morning as the Colonials will welcome Green Bay to the UPMC Events Center at 11:00 a.m. for their Kids Game. RMU will finish up the week with a matchup against Milwaukee on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
