Colonials Take Early Lead but Fall to Penn State

Storey and Ringor score

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The RMU women's hockey team jumped out to a 2-0 advantage but surrendered five unanswered goals as Penn State rallied for a 5-2 victory. With the loss, the Colonials move to 10-18-2 overall and 6-12-2 in Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) play.

FIRST PERIOD
The opening 20 minutes featured a physical, tightly contested battle, with each team assessed three minor penalties.

Despite the chippy play, RMU struck first at even strength. Penn State turned the puck over at the blue line, allowing Taylor Storey to collect it and skate the length of the ice before roofing her shot to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead.

Late in the period, RMU was assessed a five-minute major penalty that carried over into the second period.

SECOND PERIOD
Just 14 seconds into the middle frame, the Colonials capitalized while shorthanded. Jessica MacKinnon forced a turnover behind the Penn State net and slid the puck to Rowyn Ringor in the slot, where she sniped her shot to extend RMU's lead to 2-0.

Penn State answered quickly, however, scoring just 18 seconds later as Grace Outwater fired a hard shot past the RMU netminder to get the Nittany Lions on the board.

Two minutes and eight seconds later, Abby Stonehouse netted an even-strength goal to even the score. At the midway point of the period, Penn State took its first lead of the game when McKenna Walsh roofed a shot to make it 3-2.

Later in the period, RMU earned a power-play opportunity and generated five shots but was unable to convert. The Colonials were then whistled for a penalty at the conclusion of the advantage, and Penn State capitalized as Danica Maynard scored the Nittany Lions' second power-play goal to extend the lead to two.

After 40 minutes of play, Penn State held a 22-18 edge in shots.

THIRD PERIOD
Penn State added to its lead in the final period as Katelyn Roberts scored the fifth unanswered goal of the game, sealing a 5-2 victory.
