RMU Women's Basketball Drops OT Thriller to Youngstown State on the Road

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Despite a 20-point performance from Myriam Traore, the RMU women's basketball team dropped an overtime thriller to rival Youngstown State, falling 69-62 on the road to the Penguins. The Colonials now sit at 16-9 overall and 9-7 in Horizon League play.

FIRST QUARTER
  • Despite giving up the first basket to Youngstown State, the Colonials went up 5-3 over the Penguins behind five points from Myriam Traore.
  • A layup by Noa Givon with 3:16 tied the contest up at 9-9 before a layup by the Penguins made it 11-9 with 1:43 to go.
  • Bailey Kuhns closed out the first quarter scoring with a layup at 1:17 to make it 11-11 at the end of the first quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
  • Both teams remained scoreless in the second quarter until 7:57, with a Penguins layup giving Youngstown State a 13-11 lead.
  • A 5-0 run by the Colonials, featuring a three-point basket from Givon and a layup from Aislin Malcolm, gave RMU an 18-14 lead before the second quarter media timeout.
  • The quarter closed out with the Colonials on a 4-2 run with Kuhns and Givon getting two-points each, while the Penguins got a pair of made free throws from Baker with 35 seconds on the clock to make it 24-18 at the half. 
THIRD QUARTER
  • Youngstown State started the second half on a 3-0 run to cut RMU's lead down to just three before a quick jumper by Malcolm gave the Colonials their first basket of the second half.
  • A layup by Kuhns put the Colonials back up by seven with 6:13 to go before a three by Youngstown State's Danielle Cameron made it 28-24 at the media timeout.
  • The Penguins went on an 8-0 run to take a 36-34 lead over the Colonials after a three-point basket by Cameron, before a last-second layup by Malcolm made it 36-36 going into the final quarter. 
FOURTH QUARTER
  • The Colonials put together a 6-0 run to find themselves up 44-38 at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
  • A layup by the Penguins' Sophia Gregory cut the Colonials lead down to five with RMU on top 49-44 at the final media timeout.
  • The Penguins put together a 5-0 run to bring the score to 51-49 in favor of the Colonials before a pair of Penguins free throws with 13.2 seconds on the clock knotted the contest at 51-51.
  • A layup by Bailey Kuhns with 0.4 seconds on the clock gave the Colonials a 53-51 lead before a last-second layup by Youngstown State's Gregory found the net to send the game to overtime.
OVERTIME
  • The Colonials started the five-minute overtime with a made free throw from Kuhns before the Penguins went on an 8-0 run to go up 61-54.
  • Malcolm broke up the run by Youngstown State on a quick driving layup to make it 61-56 with 1:41 left in overtime.
  • Youngstown State was able to lock down the Colonial offense, securing a 69-62 overtime win after knocking down eight free throws in the final 30 seconds of the contest.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
For the Colonials, Myriam Traore scored a team-high 20 points while Aislin Malcolm and Bailey Kuhns each recorded 13 to pace RMU's offense. As a team, the Colonials shot 40.7% from the floor, going 24-59 on the night, while Youngstown State shot 34.4%. On the glass, the teams tied, with both teams recording 40 rebounds on the night, with Kuhns leading with seven.

For Youngstown State, Sarah Baker led all scorers with 21 points while Sophia Gregory pulled down a massive 16 rebounds.
