Big Second Half by Golden Grizzlies Closes out Colonials

ROCHESTER, Mich. –  A big second half by the Golden Grizzlies led to a 71-61 upset over the RMU women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon despite a 21-point performance from Eva Levingston.
 
FIRST QUARTER
  • Eva Levingston got the Colonials on the board first before back-to-back buckets gave Oakland a 4-2 lead with 8:02 on the clock.
  • The Colonials put together a small 4-0 run before the media timeout to go up 10-9 over Oakland behind a pair of baskets from Aislin Malcolm and Jada Lee.
  • RMU closed out the first quarter on a 5-0 run to go up 17-11 as Myriam Traore knocked down a three and Eva Levingston made a layup. 
SECOND QUARTER
  • The Golden Grizzlies started the scoring first in the second quarter before Jada Lee hit a quick three to put the Colonials outfront by seven.
  • A 5-0 run by Oakland cut the Colonials' lead down to just two as Oakland made a layup with 6:08 on the clock to trail RMU 20-18.
  • RMU extended its lead, this time to 10, following an 8-0 run over three and a half minutes led by Levingston with four points in the run.
  • Over the final minute-and-a-half, Oakland outscored RMU 4-2 to give RMU an eight-point lead going into the half. 
THIRD QUARTER
  • Oakland exploded on an 8-0 run to trail RMU by just two with 6:27 left in the third quarter, behind six points from Makenzie Luehring, who made back-to-back threes.
  • The Golden Grizzlies took the lead for the first time at 4:50 as Luehring drilled another pair of threes to put Oakland outfront 40-38 before Noa Givon ended the run with a jumper to make it 40-40 with 3:35 on the clock.
  • To close out the third quarter, Oakland outscored RMU 7-5, with a Givon three making it 47-45 at the end of the third.
FOURTH QUARTER
  • A Bailey Kuhns jumper started the fourth quarter scoring for the Colonials, tying the game up at 47-49 before Oakland put together a small 4-0 run to go back out front 51-47 with 8:34 displayed on the clock.
  • The Colonials pieced together a 7-0 run behind five points from Malcolm and a basket from Kuhns to cut Oaklands make the score 62-58 in favor of Oakland.
  • Following the Colonials' run, a 9-3 scoring run by the Golden Grizzlies shut RMU out, with the Colonials falling 71-61. 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
Eva Levingston continued her dominant stretch, recording another 21-point game, marking her second in a row with over 20 points. Levingston shot an impressive 81.8% from the floor, going 9-for-11 on the afternoon while also pulling down six rebounds. Aislin Malcolm (12) and Myriam Traore (11) were the only other Colonials to score in double-digits.
 
On the glass, the Colonials were outrebounded with Oakland recording 37 rebounds to the Colonials 32. Bailey Kuhns led the Colonials with eight rebounds on the night. The Colonials also were outshot on the night with Oakland shooting nearly 50% while RMU was 39.7% on the afternoon, going 23-for-58 from the floor. The three-ball was a major factor for Oakland as the Golden Grizzlies shot over 40% from the floor while RMU shot just 28.6%.
 
For Oakland, Makenzie Luehring led all scorers with 31 points, going 6-for-11 from deep and 11-20 from the floor. Luehring and Layla Gold each pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Golden Grizzlies on the glass.
 
UP NEXT
The Colonials will close out the regular season next Saturday, as RMU returns home to host Wright State on senior day. RMU will protect the UPMC Events Center with a 17-11 record and a 10-9 record in Horizon League action. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+. Senior day recognition will be post-game.
