Colonials Score 30 Runs on Day Two of Spartan Classic/Sparkle City Invite

Facher produces eight RBI on the day and hits two home runs

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The RMU softball team erupted offensively once again on day two of the Spartan Classic/Sparkle City Invite, splitting its pair of games while scoring 30 combined runs. The Colonials opened with a dominant 21-7 run-rule victory over Morgan State before falling in a hard-fought 10-9 extra-inning battle against USC Upstate. RMU now sits at 4-4 overall to begin the 2026 campaign.

GAME 1: RMU 21, Morgan State 7 (5 innings)
RMU's offense picked up right where it left off following Friday's 12-0 win over Morgan State, striking early and often.

Kaylyn Hopf led off the game with a double to left field and came around to score shortly after when Courtney Poulich reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error. Mary Brant then delivered the big blow, blasting a two-run home run to center field to give RMU a 3-0 advantage.

The Colonials continued to apply pressure, batting through the entire lineup in the opening frame. Alivia Hare drew an RBI walk to score Eloise Facher, extending the lead to 4-0.

Morgan State answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but RMU quickly responded in the second. After Sequoia Dunlap reached on an error and Poulich singled, Facher launched her second home run of the season to center field. The Colonials continued to pile on, as Aglaia Rudd doubled and Erynn Thompson followed with an RBI double. Hare added an RBI single to cap the rally and push the lead to 9-1.

The Bears narrowed the gap with four runs in the bottom of the second, but RMU delivered one of its most explosive innings of the season in the third, scoring 12 runs.

Dunlap opened the inning with a two-run home run before Facher added an RBI double. A wild pitch scored another run, and Thompson's infield single brought home Facher. Thompson later stole second and scored on a throwing error, while Hare added another RBI single to extend the lead to 16-5.

The rally continued as Mackenzie Hoover delivered a pinch-hit single and Dunlap followed with an infield RBI single. Poulich and freshman Delany O'Connor each drew RBI walks, and Haley Robinson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in another run. Camryn Harbold capped the scoring with an RBI walk before O'Connor crossed the plate on an unearned run to make it 21-5.

Morgan State scored twice in the fourth inning, but the deficit proved insurmountable as RMU secured the run-rule victory, 21-7.

QUOTABLE – HEAD COACH JEXX VARNER
On game one: "It was another historic day from this awesome start for the offense. It was great to get so many people at-bats and time out on defense. There are things we need to 100% clean up. We'll work through it, but we must start valuing every moment or situation regardless of score or opponent. That's what will get us back to championship form."

On game two: "Molitoris was great three times through the order but just ran out of gas at the end. Facher had another great day, and the depth of our lineup is proving to be too challenging for another pitching staff to hold us down for too long. This was a heartbreaker, but our focus and determination were great, and the fight response was awesome. It all matters and all these moments are a lesson for us to learn. And with lessons learned, there is no true failure. We'll be back at it tomorrow."
