RICHMOND, Va. – Despite taking an early lead, Robert Morris (0-2) could not hold off #9/9 Richmond (1-0), as they fell 17-7 on Saturday afternoon at Robins Stadium.
RMU jumped out to an aggressive start, striking just 52 seconds into the match.
Dylan Anderson ignited the offense by netting his first career goal, and the momentum continued to build less than three minutes later when
Gavin Pedone found the back of the net to give the Colonials a quick 2-0 cushion.
Despite the early dominance, the tide began to shift following a successful face-off win by
Cristian Davis. An RMU turnover negated the possession, allowing Richmond's Lucas Littlejohn to capitalize and put the Spiders on the board. RMU showed resilience in response, as
Luke Prezioso threaded a pass to Anderson for his second score of the day, briefly restoring a two-goal lead at 3-1. However, Richmond rallied for two consecutive goals to close out the opening frame leaving the game deadlocked at 3-3 heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter proved to be a pivotal turning point as Richmond's offense found its rhythm. The surge began at the 12:48 mark when Jack Ricciardi sparked a dominant five-goal run for the Spiders, effectively erasing the early deadlock. RMU struggled to find an answer during this stretch until
Koerner Marechek stepped up to notch his first career goal at 8:41, finally halting the Richmond streak and bringing the score to 8-4.
However, the Colonials' momentum was short-lived. Richmond regained their composure and managed to find the back of the net twice more before the break. This late-quarter execution allowed the Spiders to carry a commanding 10-4 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Owen Tapper's first of the season at 13:06 of the third quarter cut the Colonials' deficit in half, however it was the last goal RMU would score until Pedone's second of the game at 12:24 of the fourth quarter.
Calum Brennan added RMU's last goal of the game less than a minute later.
Nate Fechter made 14 saves. Anderson, Prezioso, and Pedone each had four shots, with the former two hitting all on target. Davis had four ground balls and Tapper forced a pair of turnovers.
Up next is RMU's home opener against Bucknell on Friday, Feb. 13. Faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. The Bison (2-0) were 11-2 winners over St. Bonaventure on Friday.
