RMU Softball Defeats Penn 9-7 in Extra Innings

Poulich hits sixth HR of the year; Facher scores career-high four runs

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Courtney Poulich delivered the decisive blow in extra innings, launching a two-run home run to lift RMU past Penn, 9-7, on Saturday at the Catamount Classic. With the win, the Colonials improve to 7-5 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Colonials wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning. Eloise Facher and Mary Brant both singled to begin the frame, and Aglaia Rudd followed with a base hit past the shortstop to give RMU a 1-0 lead.

Penn answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game with a solo home run in its first at-bat. The Quakers grabbed their first lead of the afternoon in the second inning on a sacrifice fly.

RMU responded offensively in the third. Facher ignited the rally with a triple, and Poulich brought her home with a sacrifice fly to even the score.

Brant then doubled and Rudd singled again to put runners at the corners. The Colonials executed a successful double steal, allowing Brant to score and give RMU the lead. Alivia Hare added an RBI single before Katlyn Jardine reached on a fielding error that brought home another run. The inning concluded with Erynn Thompson lifting a sacrifice fly to center field to score Hare and extend the lead to 5-2.

Penn trimmed the deficit in the fourth with an RBI double. After a scoreless fifth inning, Facher continued her standout day at the plate, leading off the sixth with a solo home run to left-center. However, the Quakers answered in the bottom of the inning with a three-run homer to tie the game at 6-6.

Neither team was able to push across a run in the seventh inning, sending the contest into extra innings.

Under tiebreaker rules in the eighth, Thompson was placed on second base. With two outs, Facher reached on a fielding error that allowed Thompson to score and put the Colonials back in front.

Poulich then stepped to the plate and delivered the game's biggest hit, blasting a two-run home run to extend RMU's lead to 9-6.

Penn managed to plate one run in the bottom of the inning but could not complete the comeback as RMU held on for the 9-7 victory.
